2 Paths to Upgrading (CPU & GPU) OR (MOBO, RAM, NEW GEN CPU)

I wouldn't go for less that this to really feel a performance boost and to keep the upgrade path open.

CPU AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor $194.99 @ Walmart

So here's the deal... Both upgrade paths to my build will cost the same, I game at 1440p, my CPU runs at 100% much more than I would like when playing games.

Currently I have a gtx 980 and i5 4690k which are 5 years old now and I thought it was time for an upgrade.

First path - i5 4690k -> i7 4790k & gtx 980 -> gtx 1070ti

Second path - i5 4690k -> Ryzen 3600X & LGA1150 socket MOBO -> AM4 socket MOBO & DDR3 -> DDR4 RAM

Now I'm too lazy to sell these off so I'm just going to be trading my old parts in to an electronic store except from the old mobo.

Basically I need people to make a decision for me because of my poor decision making skills but seriously what should I upgrade and why?

The 9600k isn't a great cpu as it doesn't hame smt. I'd go with the first option, it will give you more performance overall due to the gpu upgrade. The 9000 series intel isn't great in terms of price/performance. Due to ryzen coming hot on intel's trail, the new 10000 intel gen should offer better value for money, so I'd wait for that to drop.

Ryzen 1600 : $100

cheap mobo : $50

16gb ddr4 : $80

Keep the 980, im sure with that cpu it would not bottleneck.

Even though the 9000 series isn't great in price/performance I do believe it's a massive upgrade I'll definitely take your advice with waiting for the new intel gen that seems like a rational idea. Also do you think a 4690k to 4790k is justified it's the highest Haswell CPU I can get without having to upgrade my motherboard

9600k aren't a good upgrade, it's not enough even for today's games even though it's a big upgrade per se. Get R5 3600 build or wait for next year releases (Zen 3, whatever Intel are planning to answer with).

While I would love to switch over to AMD that particular CPU is hardly an upgrade and while I agree it may relax the bottlenecking with its higher core count isn't there a better CPU as my budget is higher than that

I'm not some intel fanboy or whatever I don't care for that stuff but I heard the intel was still better for gaming am I mistaken?

9900k and 9700k - yes, not 9600k, even OC'd.

From that i5 is a massive upgrade, 2 more cores and 8 more threads. I just offering the minimum, you can get 2600 or 3600 if you want to. My point is in current situation don't buy intel, especially that 9600.

Any recommendations for this cheap mobo?

Yeah there's no point in getting such a cheap mobo. It won't allow you to upgrade your cpu if tou want to go for more cores or for next gen ryzen. I'd go for a $100 mobo minimum

I ended up getting the 3600X, B450 Tomahawk after a lot of thinking and the cheapest 16gb of decent RAM I could find Corsair Vengeance 3000mhz, thanks for your help!
