I have 2 old laptops from the 2009. What version of Linux should I get on them

They both have AMD dual core processors. One is 1 GHz and one is 1.3 GHz. One has 4 GB ram and one has 2 GB ddr3. They all have enough space for any linux operating system. I was thinking Ubuntu but I think that it is too much for the processors because my processors are very slow

He could run any of these for either laptop

Choosing the right desktop manager is what makes a difference, the base OS means little to performance.

System specs:

4790k

GTX 1050

16GB DDR3

Samsung evo SSD

a few HDD's

It's not the distros, it's the default ram usage.

I run Mint on my laptop and have been very happy with it.  It boot up quick (upgraded to SSD) and does everything I need it to do.  I didn't like Ubuntu as much as Mint.  Manjaro didn't seem to run as well as Mint does, but that could be because the original HDD was dying (hence the SSD).

Debian net install will give you a very light base. I would avoid gnome and KDE desktops on systems without a SSD. They are perfectly usable in a 4GB system but I find these advanced desktops are not very responsive/smooth on a 5400rpm laptop drive. Real nerds don't need a desktop manager.

I would suggest Mint for both of them. My choice would be the MATE version. It seems to run very well on older hardware.
