They sell some of both.

Some of their monitors are excellent.

Some of their laptops are absolute garbage.

Over all I'd avoid their stuff unless it's business grade. Even then there's usually something better.

Yeah, they don;t really "do" consumer grade.  There business stuff is ok though. Its a bit like dell business grade, built to last.  Also there pre-built can be overpriced

Not at all. HP laptops were absolutely terrible for bloatware. I had 2 friends baby their laptops and the hinges broke. Overall they had very cheap plasticy feelings to them and often had issues with overheating.

The newer HP's (some of the Envy's) weren't bad, but it was too late to save their reputation.

For the price, you can get better items from other companies.

This is key. HP's business stuff is pretty top notch, but even then you're better off with Lenovo for laptops and Dell for monitors.

Very true.

You can find awesome refurbished prices on HP stuff though. $350 ($450 new) for a 27" IPS monitor that's on par if not better than the PB278Q for example.

It's hard to beat Lenovo in the laptop area though. The ability to spec a laptop that can get 24+ hours of battery life is perfection.

Just throw my two cents a working computer repair shop the computers we mainly see on a daily basis are HP Dell Toshiba Asus and Acer. Computers we never see belong to the business line of the same companies. HP Business Line never comes in for repair other then virus removal work hard drive failures. Same with Dell and Lenovo. Business computers last much longer intend to have a much lower failure rate repair ability what score a considerable amount higher then consumer PCs. I really don't think there's much of the quality difference if it is on the consumer side of the fence. My suggestion and two sense to you its okay to skip the consumer PCs and go straight to the business line the main look like death but got to the work and last much longer.

Not all HP PCs are bad same thing goes for all the companies . My biggest recommendation though is to pick up a business line PC they never come in for repair and I literally mean NEVER. We have a brand new Dell Inspiron where when you move the LCD screen the computer powers off instantly lol

over all i would say they are not bad. My dad has an hp desktop currently and it has been good so far, and one my sister had was great for years. Friends of mine have had laptops that lasted a long time, but they seem to have cooling issues if you push them hard. honestly dell is the only computer manufacture i have personally had a horrible experience with.

Oh forgot to add, my kid's mom has a fairly new hp laptop that works great in every way except the web cam, it is like they made the the cable to it just to short for it to stay plugged in when you shut the screen all the way, so she has to pull the bezzle off and plug it back up when ever she needs to use the camera.

HP laptops generally have poor build quality, poor warranty support, poor longevity and are designed like shitty Macbook clones. I had a DV7, I didn't miss it when it drowned during an incident where me and my friends drove a car into a river in far north Queensland. Here's a pic:

I've been using a Pavilion G7 2233cl (specs in sig (upgraded)) from Costco, and it runs pretty well, the build quality is pretty damn good considering i beat the hell out of it taking it on road trips and and to school every day. Its been dropped off tables, fallen out of my bag, fell into about 6 inches of snow while it was on yesterday and is still chugging along just fine. The only thing is that they run DAMN hot even though i dust mine out enery month or so by taking the whole thing apart, dusting the heatsink with a q-tip and replace the thermal compound with Thermal Fusion 400 and i still saw the CPU get up to 128*C last night while i was TRYING to fill up the ram. (Folding, furmark, Photoshop with about 6GB of Jpgs open, 11 chrome tabs, and a crap ton of Windows explorer windows open) I recommend the ProBook 4540s with the i5 to my light-gamer/non gamer friends (all 5 of them love it) and they have had no problems other than not being coffee - proof.

(Sorry for the paragraph)

(I mean essay)

ok btw i said i was not buying from them

Most of these companies Dell, HP, Lenovo etc sell some great products and some crappy products. Mostly for "home" lines they are plastic rubbish. But If you spend some money and get say a business line of products for HP then you'd be looking at some higher end decent to excellent hardware.

Some advice. Allt he Laptops from 600 and lower from any of these companies will always be.. how you say?... bad... so its not just Hewlett Packard :P
