Looking for advice on new build

Hi guys,

 

Currently running a i5 2500 with 8gigs of ram and a 128GB SSD.

Couple of months ago I upgraded my Radeon 7950 to RTX2060, now it's time to upgrade the rest since I feel my system has become unstable ever since.

Feels like it's dying / bottlenecking. (random BSODs, PC rebooting during demanding games with sound stutter, ... )

I ran FurMark without problems for couple of hours, so my GPU seems fine.

Prime95 gave this error:

FATAL ERROR: Rounding was 0.5, expected less than 0.4
Hardware failure detected, consult stress.txt file. 

 

Anyway, doesn't matter much, looking for a new rig anyway!

Some extra information

 

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Casual gaming (dad to be) + every day use.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

Currently using a 24" inch monitor, might upgrade later. High/Ultra @ 1080p.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

I already bought a graphics card (RTX 2060), got € 800 left.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

Belgium, Europe.

• Not entirely sure about the SSD.

• Do I need extra case fans if I'm not really planning to OC?

• I read the MAX version of the mobo does NOT need to be flashed to be compatible with the latest Ryzen CPU's, is that correct?

• Any other comparable cases I should look at? I like the minimalistic / clean design of it.

• Memory brand / speed ok? I read that 3600 is ideal for the Ryzen 3600

• 650W PSU enough / overkill ?

• Should I wait for black friday sales / holiday sales?

1) It's always good to have an SSD, even more so now that games need more and more time to load.

2) If the case comes with two fans (one for in and one for out air flow) you don't need anything else.

3) Correct. MAX are compatible with Ryzen 3xxx series out of the box.

4) Don't know, sorry.

5) It's pretty good and have a nice latency.

6) 650W is more than enough for almost anything.

 

Your build is pretty good in general. Maybe you can sell or return the 2060 and get something more powerful like a RX 5700 XT or 2070 super but, for 1080p 60Hz, RTX 2060 is more than enough.

if you get a case with only one or two fans, it can be pretty helpful to potentially reduce noise. For the case you picked, a second fan intake would be helpful.

yes, although that's MSI specific. There are other B450 boards and such that are guaranteed to work out of box without some special denotation, like the ASRock B450M/AC.

I'm sold on the SSD, but not entirely sure about the exact type I should go for, done lots of reading and the Crucial P1 and intel 660p often come back, but then I read some negative reviews about the SSD's when they were reaching capacity and slowing down tremendously.

 

Yeah, not sure about the 2060. Want to see how it runs combined with the rest of my new system. It looked as the best bang for your buck card when I bought it a couple of months ago.

I tried the Belgian Pcpp but most parts didn't have sellers / prices, so hard to use.

any inexpensive be quiet! fans work pretty well, and if you want some LED flair the Corsair AF series looks pretty good.

Crucial P1, a QLC NVMe SSD. Its main competitor is the Intel 660p and a bunch of TLC SATA SSDs like the Curcial MX500, Adata SU800, WD Blue/SN500.

 

Not for the NZXT H510, this case does come with 4 fans tho I myself will get a better ventillated case in the first place.

 

Technically yes, but I've read about new "steppings" of CPUs (i,.e. production run) needing newer BIOS revisions in order to work. Best to rely on BIOS flashback feature of the motherboard.

 

Not having some kind of mesh somewhere will hurt airflow significantly, that's just how aerodynamics work. Noy saying it has to be an entire mesh front like the Fractal Design Meshify C/S2 or Corsair 275R airflow edition, but there are cases like the Define C or Corsair 275R for example.

 

Brand of memory is fine, Team Group, Galax, Kingston, G.skill, Corsair, Crucial etc, you're just buying their customer service. 3600MHz CL16 is one of the best value picks no matter the platform, I have no problem with that.

 

RTX 2060 is a 160w by design from Nvidia and tops at 200-225w gaming load when overclocked and overvolted, R5 3600 draws 120w at worst, so 650w is overkill. You're fine with even 450w, tho 550w is the better deal.

I like the look of those Fractal Design cases, I'll have a look and see if it fits my budget.

I'd recommend the MX500 then, speed difference from SATA to NVMe is not a game changer, but MX500 is based on well-proven tech. Not so worried about lifespan or speed drop as SSDs fill up even for QLC, it's not expensive to get 1TB or higher SSDs anyway
