My cousin lives near a river and wanted to experiment if adding a water from the river pass through a filter and pump then through the water block on the CPU then out the river again makes the best silent cooler since its outside the house. im laughing at the thought but then, fresh cool water that doesn't heat up might be a good idea.

Im with the mentaility of "IF IM NOT SURE IF ITS ENOUGH COOLING, GO OVERKILL"

Microsoft is working on it already.

I am not sure how well your pump would work. River water isn't exactly clean, your probably going to get the block and tubing all clogged with crap. You better off with just a massive heat sync or something you can submerge in the water.

Oh cool. though he said he will use filters for it(the ones that used to make potable water) though idk how he will do it.

Algae.  You forgot algae. Also if the water is hard there will be buildup.  So very not worth it.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Potable won’t cut it.  There’s water hardness and particulate for one.  Of many.

if there’s no other way to stop the madness maybe you can talk him into using a water to water heat exchanger.  He just wants the river temps.  He doesn’t need the actual river water. A water to water heat exchanger in the river would keep the radiator fluid separate from the living stuff.  Maybe an old cast iron radiator sitting in the river.  It’s still crazy of course.

Use a heat exchanger and 2 loops so that you can have proper coolant going through the PC ?

This is the correct answer.  Forever and always if you want to do some crazy shit, use a heat exchanger.  It keeps the desktop side clean and makes it so the "dirty" side can be tap water, 1HP pump, whatever.  I have 3 heat ex changers running in my house, they're relatively cheap to buy off ebay but you lose some $ adapting 1" NPT to smaller dimensions.  Linus's whole room watercooling wouldn't have been such a huge failure if he used heat exchangers amongst other things.

You can also dunk a radiator in whatever body of water but the housing is usually steel and will rust eventually.

In any case, watch out for sub-ambient water temperatures and the dew point.

Workstation:  9800X3D|| Asus X670E ProArt Creator || MSI Gaming Trio 4090 Shunt || T.Force 7800CL34 || Corsair AX1600i@240V || whole-house loop.

LANRig/GuestGamingBox: 13700K @ Stock || MSI Z690 DDR4 || ASUS TUF 3090 650W shunt || Corsair SF600 || CPU+GPU watercooled 280 rad pull only || whole-house loop.

Server Router (Untangle): 13600k @ P-Core only || ASRock Z690 ITX || All 10Gbe || 2x8GB 3200 || PicoPSU 150W 24pin + AX1200i on CPU|| whole-house loop

Server Compute/Storage: 10850K @ 5.1Ghz || Gigabyte Z490 Ultra || EVGA FTW3 3090 1000W || LSI 9280i-24 port || 4TB Samsung 860 Evo, 5x10TB Seagate Enterprise Raid 6, 4x8TB Seagate Archive Backup ||  whole-house loop.

Yea the one I got was pretty cheap, I have 3 computers on one big loop that goes out on my roof to a quad radiator. Well 2 of them are essentially server machines but still. I did it for two reasons which was I have a small rad on each loop so if one pump fails I only would have a shut down of half the computers and plus the server loop was all stable and I did not want to mix so many blocks In one loop. A heat exchanger has very good thermal transfer so it will work fine there and then you don't need filters or anything as the water can be a bit dirty on the one side of the system. I really like this idea of a way of cooling but make sure there is still some case airflow and make sure you don't get it too cold and then condensation kills your build. Also I agree if linus had used a small heat exchanger for each connection on his whole room water cooling thing it would have worked better especially considering each pc had it's own pump anyway. Plus he could have left the single rad on each PC connected on the return side of the loop and if the main loop failed it would not interrupt anything. I always loved that video and I think lots of people have done smaller successful versions since then.

I should have quoted the original poster to but I guess he will see it anyway.
