Converting VOB files to video file

I have some VOB files that i would like to convert to video files, how would i go about doing this, what software would i use for example?

VOB files are video files, though?

Smartassiness aside, Handbrake should work just fine from my personal experience. You can also do deinterlacing if necessary.

VOB files are MPEG2 files mixed with subtitles and some other crap.

 

Handbrake will take them in, but no matter what you do, it will recompress them, resulting in quality loss (like opening a JPG file and saving it again as JPG)

 

If you want to get a MKV file or possibly a MP4 file without recompressing the video or losing any quality, you can use a combination of two programs:

This allows you to take in a series of VOB files and export a single continuous mpeg2 video file and the audio tracks. 

Once they're created, you can load those files into a muxer application and combine them into MKV video file, or MP4 possibly.

 

The application looks like this :

 

From audio menu, select  output method > demux all tracks

Load your vob files with File > Open ... select all your vob files..you can order them the way you want them after hitting ok (i'm using two free trailers to show the process)

 

 

From the file menu, select preview and after a few seconds stop from same menu. A window should show up on the side, with info about the stream ... note down the resolutions and the framerate and aspect ratio ... in my case the window looked like this

 

Now from the File menu, you can select Save project and demux video

In the destination folder you choose, you'll get two files or more (depending on how many audio tracks)

One file will be the video track and should have the m2v extension , and in my case the other file is called columbiatristardvd T80 3_2ch 384Kbps DELAY 0ms.ac3   which means it's an AC3 encoded file and that there's no initial delay.

Open the app, and drag the m2v file in the interface :

 

 

On the right side, set the Default duration / fps to the proper value. My video is 25 fps, interlaced, so I choose 50i (50 frames in total) ... you may have 59.97 (ntsc has higher framerate) .. if you don't get this right, the video will not be in sync with audio or sped up, you can simply use another value and repeat the process.

Also, set the aspect ratio ... in my case, the video is 720x576 on DVD but the video instructs the player that aspect ratio is 4:3 and display size should be 540x576 ... you can either choose set aspect ratio and select 4:3 (or your aspect ratio), or select display width/height and enter the recommended display size there.

 

Now, add your AC3 file by dragging it in the source files. Select "add as new source file if asked", then select the AC3 entry at the bottom, and on the right side you should now see Delay (in ms) . If the file name has a delay different than 0, write the number here:

 

 

And you're done. Click on Start multiplexing button (at the bottom of the application, not visible in the screenshots I made) and in a few seconds you'll have a MKV file.
