Help moving out, what should I do to move to another city in the US

Hello guys,

I am moving this late December to Iowa from Colorado. I got maybe 2 suitcases plus an small suitcase full of clothes and personal belongings plus an ITX PC and a 27 inch monitor. I was wondering how should I move, the cheaper the better. I might end up having a driver's license by the middle of december and I am a 21 year old male so I do not even know if renting a car is possible in the US given my situation. Any leads would be great, driving would be around 12 hours 850 miles trip.

You could look into if renting a U-Haul would be feasible for you. Frankly, even an Econoline van would be wholly suitable for your needs, much less a box truck.

If you own a car by the time the trip happens, that'd be a lot easier but maybe a U-Haul would be your best bet.

If you don't have furniture just mail your PC, monitor, and 2 suitcases. Then fly with ones suitcase as a carry on

I was thinking on that, I have just no clue how expensive it is to ship my pc and monitor. I certainly fear driving for 12 hours as an inexperience driver

I would say car rental, do it across 2 or 3 days. Price of a rental is about $50-ish per day (including insurance; always get the insurance). Find a motel for the nights, around 80-ish per night. I did a road trip from California to Kentucky across 2 nights, and back a week or so later. Round trip cost me about 500USD for fuel, food, and lodging for the drives (stayed with a relative while in KY) (also, diesel fuel was much cheaper than gasoline (and stayed consistent) outside of California).

 

Some places will let you rent at 21, some may require 25, but most, if not all require a credit card, unfortunately. Some new rules in 2018, I think it was.

 

I believe U-Haul rents out large trucks, too (like Ford F150s and Chevy Silverados), which could be an option versus the large enclosed trucks. Just make sure to bring in all your luggage if you stay in a motel so they aren't a beacon to vandals/thieves.

 

If you do manage a rental car, though, try to get one with a flat back seat, or a wagon. Then, you can park next to any rigs at truckstops to stay the night if you don't/can't get a motel and sleep in there. It's not the most comfortable, but it works.

That's not a lot of stuff at all and could honestly be fit in a car easily. Looks like Enterprise would charge $489.66 for the rental (minus gas of course) if you picked it up in Denver and dropped it off in Des Moines (obviously I have no clue where in Colorado you are or where you're moving to in Iowa). You can rent cars at age 21, you just have to pay an additional fee that you normally don't have to once you hit 25.

You're going to definitely need that for any sort of drive yourself options, definitely work on that if that's the route you want to go.

That's super doable in a day, don't listen to these people telling you to sell your stuff or have it mailed to where you're going. I wouldn't trust FedEx or an airline to handle my shit if I had the option to transport it all myself which sounds like what you're wanting to do. Word of advice is to get yourself a GPS of some kind like a Garmin as that will make navigating MUCH easier, loved mine when I traveled between Iowa and the western side of South Dakota regularly. I drove from north of LA to montana in a single day. A 12hr trip is very easy to one day road trip it. 

Renting will be very expensive however, perhaps more so than flying with 4 bags. You will be charged an underage fee for renting, and have to pay for gas as well and a one-way rental fee. Driving would be safer than flying for your computer, but im almost certain will be more expensive than super economy air. 

A cheap flight with carry on and two checked bags is 280-350$.

Considering the apparently tiny amount of possessions, the bus might be the cheapest option.  A U-haul would be basically empty, and even a car would be half empty.  Plus you don’t know if you will have one.  IF you have to have a car anyway in Iowa, which is probable, buying one now and traveling in it is a very viable option.  For one thing when you get there you have a car.  You likely won’t need a trailer though. 
 

Car rental seems like more money for less value to me.  It does retain you some personal power though.  An owner vehicle is better if you can afford it.  The bus is cheapest but leaves you with little on the other side, and scary folks hang out at bus terminals looking for people just like you.

 

The biggest danger you face that I can see is it sounds like you’re in a major life transition, making you ideal fodder for abusive organizations.  Cults, Amway, etc..  use caution.

 

Having a place to live there that you control  before you leave will help.  People who spontaneously offer you “a place to stay” frequently aren’t doing it for nothing.  Having a vehicle creates mobility making you harder to trap.

 

Having a support system in place before the trip, even a small one, can create personal security.  

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Thought about this more generally addressing the headline more than the specific question

 

“travel” is a foreshortening of “travail” which means danger and suffering, more or less.  In this society it has become easier and safer.  Problems still need to be avoided though.

 

to move to another place you need to have support at the other end:

1: shelter.  This can be a hotel room, an already rented apartment, any one of several options.  Having it in place though solves many potential headaches.

2: clothing (you’re bringing it.  This one is covered. Check weather)

3: transportation (this is easier to get in this day and age.  Unless you’re bringing it with you though it requires both money and communication.  Removing only one of these leaves you with big problems).

bringing your transportation with you has major advantages in that you can always simply leave again.

4: the means to maintain the above 3

when you get there.  “Promised” jobs have a habit of changing into something much less appealing or disappearing entirely upon arrival.

have contingencies.  Get guarantees.  Still have contingencies anyway.
