Looking for some advice?

I'm looking at the most cost effective ways to upgrade my system.

 

Its currently used mainly for light work related stuff, browsing, and games like Civ & Football Manager however I am considering doing some more PC gaming too.

 

This is an overview of my current system

 

Also someone can point me in the right direction for some sites that help someone learn about the various BIOS settings to ensure I have the system set up the best it can be that would also be greatly appreciated.

what kind of gaming?

more "casual" single player games.

games that will look stunning with good graphics and monitors.

i'd defenitly suggest getting some new memory since it looks like it's only 1200MHz (DDR3?)

What cpu is it? there are quite a lot of i5 cpu's

The cpu is good enough. You can upgrade the 1050ti to a RX580. That's all you need i think.

Is that an i5 8400 (6 cores)? I think it is. For light gaming, that one is still enough. If you need a stronger CPU for some work related stuff, an i9 9900 would fit.

 

Ram on 2400 MHz is just fine for unclockable Intel, no worries there.

 

The GPU is a weakling. For modern games on 1080p you should consider upgrading to GTX 1660 (regular, super or ti), RTX 2060 or RX vega 56.

Upgrading to an RX 580 isn't worth it. It's roughly 30% stronger on average, not a difference large enough to justify the money spending.

It's actually closer to double the performance than it is 30%.

I don't think it is. I had the 380X in my PC, it's just slightly above the 1050ti and some 20-40% depending on the game weaker than a 580, tested with a friends 580.

Rx 580 makes gtx1050ti look like hot garbage.

Fix your ram mhz speed. Get a rtx 2060 after all the ones in the wild break. Ray tracing is the only real upgrade for you.

If gaming performance isn't your top priority, I would upgrade the overall system before the graphics. That said if you're otherwise happy with your pc the GPU is the next logical upgrade. I would probably go for the RX 580 as well, then go for ram, though you'll need a better motherboard for DDR4 (I think). After, go for cpu and cooling, but dont forget about peripherals(ie, mouse,  monitor, keyboard, headset etc.).

as an ex 1050ti owner, i can attest you that 580 is a big jump.

Stable 60fps in most games (high) where 1050ti can only do 30-40fps.

Thank you all for the advice so far.

 

I am using Speccy to get the system overview, i'm not sure why it is reporting memory speed at 1199mhz, I checked the dimms and I have 2x 8GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4 at 2400mhz and it is showing as 2400mhz in the bios.

 

The CPU is i5-8400 @ 2.80Ghz

 

As in what types of games, I've just bought Witcher 3 and also have the ability to play Gears 4, Forza Horizon 4 & Middle Earth Shadow of war as they are play anywhere titles and I have them on Xbox.

I also forgot to add that I'm currently running 2x Samsung 24" C450 monitors but will be looking to change to one larger monitor but which one i'm undecided so far.

Don't get a new monitor just yet. 24 is fine. For example: going up to 28 would not be a worthwhile upgrade. Unless you wanted like 32 to 37 inches then maybe go get a used tv cheap. Some people give them away now days.  Which is freaking awesome for csgo. Ray tracing and larger screen are the only upgrades you're going to be able to tell after a few months.
