CPU Temp concerns

I’m not expert by any means and have only had a pc since April 2019. I recently had a full system crash so I download afterburner for the OSD to monitor things to get a feel for how my pc normally runs under load. 
 

I have an I7 8700 on an asus B360M-A And a RTX 2060. While playing GTAV I’ve been hovering at 90c and getting as high as 96c. It makes me nervous cause my gpu gets nowhere near that hot.
 

So is that normal?  or is it way to hot and I should get a cpu cooler yesterday? I just got the 2060 and just started monitoring temps so I’m clueless.

96C is way too hot. Repaste and remount your CPU cooler ASAP

The chip is still more than capable of drawing more power than what it needs. Turn off any auto-enchanting features. What case and fan setup you have and what's your room temp like?

I keep my room as cool as possible around 65F. My case is a cyber power which isn’t the best. I have 3 intake and 1 exhaust 120mm. I took the front shroud of my case off last night after posting and it made a 10C difference. So I was still around 80C. Not idle but better.

If you constrain voltage, you can get it to 75C which target with stock cooler. It's probably over 1.25V now.

The i7 8700 can use about 105W on full load with it's all cores turbo boosting all the way to 4.3ghz.

 

The 65W tdp is calculated for the 3.2ghz base frequency.

 

Your only issue here is that the stock cooler is bad and you probably already suffer of a bad air flow and hotter ambient temperature.

 

You should be able to solve the issue with any inexpensive air cooler like a Hyper 212 Black Edition.

Thank you. I’ve been looking for coolers so I’ll check that one out. I’ve been testing other games and took off my case shroud for the 3 intake fans and have been running a stable 70c. But still plan on getting a cooler.

Almost any CPU cooler will be better than the Intel stock one, just get a $20 one I wouldn't bother getting a Hyper 212 Black if you have the non-k CPU. Even a Hyper TX3 Evo is good enough.

TDP is manufacturers estimate of how much CPU will produce heat and how much cooler can dissipate it. It's the least accurate way to compare anything in cooling.

 

Target temp is what Intel has designed their CPUs to run at, and where stock cooler is aiming. However, Intel has long time issue with CPUs using much more voltage than actually is needed. So 75C is normal load temp, 85C should be max and everything over that is hot.

The stock cooler isn't very good and it's barely adequate for the i7-8700. Your temps are high but not dangerous. It's not a bad idea to get a better cooler for lower temps and noise especially since the case probably doesn't have very good airflow.
