Graphics card dead options to go with i7 2600k?

Michael.W

Hey guys.

I am currently running an EVGA GTX780SC  and I think it is on its death bed. (Image attached)

So I plan on replacing it. Now I could pick up one of eBay or something for less than $60 but why not upgrade a bit.
I am looking for what card would be the most powerful I could pair with the i7 2600k the system has for a cpu without a bottleneck making extra money spent a waste.

I am wondering about the 10 series cards like a 1050 or is that even to much should I go down to the 9 series?

Recommendations?

Don't worry about bottleneck. You may use any gpu (maybe except 2080). Of course that with better CPU you'll get better results, but it's not only because CPU will be used in 100% and bottleneck. Your whole system (slower ram, pci-e etc.) limit your fps. I saw tests of i7 2700k with 2080 in youtube. And even if framerates are worse than in 8700k case, there was no 100% cpu usage problem.

1660 or 1660Ti will be great. Also 580 if you prefer red cards. Anything below is not worth spending money imo.

Pick up a used GTX 1070 and enjoy.

I second this.

The GTX 1070 is the perfect 1080p sweet spot card for the price atm. I am using one with a i5-4670K right now with no issues at all. I am running most games at High to Ultra at well above 60 FPS. At right around $200 used, you can't beat it.

It is only about 20% slower than a RX 5700, but it is almost 20% faster than a GTX 1660 and anything comparable.

Get an RX 470/480/570/580 on ebay, they're $80-120 preferably an 8GB model with a decent sized cooler.

They're fine for 1080p gaming if you only have a 1080p 60hz display.

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

1660 & ti is dead , which is replaced by 1660 super, its on par with 1070 in many titles

also ~40-50% slower than 5700/xt

The 5700XT is for sure near 50% better than the 1070, but is also about double the price. Checks out right?

But I was talking the regular 5700, which is much closer to the 1070 with only a 20% gap in performance, but the 1070 being a whole $100 cheaper than the 5700.

I was just making the point that price wise the 1070 makes a lot of sense when looking at price to performance. Streetguru mentioned something in the RX480/RX580 range which is a great recommendation at a $80-$130 price range. But for just that little more, you can get a used 1070 at $200, which is about 50% faster than the RX580 and family.

I would suggest 2 alternatives:

1.

A used GPU like GTX 1060/1070 or RX 570/580.

I bought a used RX 580 for a PC I built for my kid (paired with a 3770K) and they are very well matched.

You will get the most for your money on the used market.

2.

If you wanna buy a new GPU I would suggest buying something like a 5700XT / 2070S / 2080S which you can still use if you upgrade your CPU in a year or two.

CPU: i9 9900K   Cooler: NH-D15   RAM: Kingston Fury 4 x 8GB 3600MHz CL17   Mobo: ASUS ROG Strix Z390-F   GPU: ASUS 3080 TUF   Case: In Win D-Frame   PSU: Corsair HX850i   Storage: 250GB Samsung 970 EVO NVMe (OS), 500GB Samsung 970 EVO NVMe (Games), 2TB Crucial BX500 SSD (Storage)   Monitor: Samsung Odyssey Neo G9.

Thank you for all the input guys.

I have an on 8800gts I’m going to chuck in to confirm it’s the gpu just for sanity’s sake.

otherwise a local vendor I got a hold of has two Asus Strix 1070s they where never able to move and is willing to do a deal.

alas now that it’s not random and the card seems to be fully dead I have run out of time to get things shipped as the pc is used for work.

Well that got out of hand fast....

So I fitted the 8800gts and did confirm that the graphics card was dead.

I was talking with a mate a he had just built a baller system with twin 2080 supers and he mentioned has had a good GPU from the old one he was willing to give me for a good price.

So I go around to his place and we get talking and he goes over to pick up a GPU saying I can have for $300nzd and then he hands me a pretty new looking box...… an EVGA 2070 super...….

So yea...….. I got a 2070 Super...… Guess I'm set for a while.
