Help me help my sister.

m1lk3y

So, my sister is searching for a new camera, and she seems pretty set on a Nikon Z6 (she can be picky, but if you have other recommendations on similar products I can bring it up to her). Since I'm the "techie" of the family she always comes to me to help her find good deals. Since I don't really know anything about photography or equipment I figured I would come here! Do any of you guys know where she can find a good deal on the camera? It seems most places only offer the body, and there's the occasional bundle with a 24-70 lens. If it's bundled, she wants the lens to have a fixed aperture at 2.8. So I'm guessing she's gonna have to get them separately anyway. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks guys.

Also just for future info, I did check slick deals, Newegg, B&H and the like. Just wanted to make sure there wasn't anywhere else out there that might have a better deal.

Check out nikonpricewatch.com. These guys also run sister sites for the other major brands.

Depending on what she's doing, she might want to check out Canon's EOS R line. The screen is more flexible.

Then there's always Sony's beasts. The A7 line is pretty killer.

She's looking to spend $3k, I think eBay is a little too low brow for her ;)

Hard to make a recommendation without knowing what she’ll be shooting. Z6 maybe overkill.

Nikon's Z cameras would probably be the on the bottom of the stack of new mirrorless cameras I would recommend, UNLESS she already has a collection of Nikkor lenses and wants to keep using them by adapting them.

If this is a brand new camera system that she's buying into, Sony and Canon both already have more developed lens ecosystems and have better AF performance, so those cameras would be ones I would suggest her to take a look at. Just my 2c

I'd say the most directly comparable camera at the Z6's price point would be the Sony A7III. Overall, I think the A7III is the better camera. Like @lyondellbasell said, the Z6 could be a better choice if she already has a bunch of Nikon F mount glass since that'll all work natively via an adapter. If not, the Sony's lens lineup as well as third party lenses gives her more options. Plus, it depends on what she shoots.

I, personally, don't recommend Canon. While I'd say their RF lens lineup is better, I'm not a huge fan of Canon bodies, their sensors in particular. Since 2008 when I worked in a camera shop the dream has always been to have Canon lenses for Nikon cameras!

System Specs: Second-class potato, slightly mouldy
