Upgrading Laptop to use SSD

You can have both an SSD and an HDD. Thats how I went with my laptop. NVME SSD + stock 1 TB HDD 

Hi All,

I hope some of you can help me. Below are specs of my laptop.

 

HP Pavilion 15-ak000na Gaming Laptop

Upgraded to 16G RAM

HDD 1 TB 5400 rpm SATA

 

Recently my laptop HDD was running at 100% disk usage when booting up. After uninstalling all the HP crap software it seems to behaving normally however from what I have seen on forums that this is a temporary fix. Should I upgrade to SDD which version I should I go for either or both of the drives below.  

 

Samsung 860 EVO 1 TB SATA 2.5" Internal SSD

Samsung 860 EVO M.2 1 TB SATA M.2 Internal SSD

Well you may wanna take off the bottom pannel off your laptop and look at what you can even use. Not every laptop has an M.2 Slot and may even vary between SATA M.2 and NVME M.2

You'll want to the 2.5" SATA model. From what I can tell your laptop doesn't have an M.2 slot.

Hi Silentprototipe,

 

I have checked this before and I believe it does the video of upgrading my laptop is linked below. He also has other videos that shows how add an m.2 and 2.5 inch ssd drives. My question is would this upgrade actually solve my issue of 100% disk usage in the future?

Not entirely per say but it would distribute workloads across drives. If you were to get an NVME SSD (If it supports it) yes it would. As for SATA SSD's it wouldn't but it wont be noticeable anyways since SATA SSD's are quick anyways. This comes from personal experience with both kinds of SSD's

Hi @Silentprototipe

 

Unfortunately the laptop only supports the SSD's that I have listed. Forgive me but what is significance does an SSD with NVME have on system performance? I don't think I will gaming on this laptop really, I just need to it function so that I can actually get some work done for  mobile app development. Should I consider upgrading my laptop? Thanks again for the speedy reply.

Thats actually not true, You can slap in any SSD in as long as it fits the standard. That's why standards exist. Source being my own Envy X360 (And we both know how pissy HP is with aftermarket hardware). NVME SSD's dont really do much to overall system responsiveness over normal SATA ones but hammering an NVME SSD vs a SATA one with big files will bring out its differences.

That's good to know, I doubt that I will require an SSD with NVME. Last question should I add both drives or just one of them and which one should I add?

Unfortunately my M.2 connection doesn't support NVME only AHCI, could I still use this to run my Windows OS or would this cause problems?

Yes, That just means you can do SATA M.2
