Is it worth upgrading from 7700k to 9900k solely for gaming?

celpas

I have an RTX 2080 paired with 16GB DDDR4 3200mhz RAM and a 7700k but on Battlefield V, my GPU usage is never really above 90% at any time and fps ranges from 67fps on some maps to 80 on others at 1440p resolution. 67 fps is when GPU usage is around 70%, sometimes even 55%. RTX and DLSS are off. Will upgrading to 9900k make GPU usage above 90% and increase fps? I only use my PC for gaming and mostly Battlefield V.

Yeah going to an 8 core would help, for only gaming the 9900K is faster but i'd recommend having a look at the Ryzen 3700X also.

Just gaming? Even the R5 3600 will do well, especially at higher resolutions. There's no real need to blow the money on the 9900k.

^^^ The 3600 or 3700X would be solid. The 9900K is faster by a little bit, but it's also a $161 price premium (just checked PCPartPicker) over the 3700X for that extra few %.

I would just hold onto the 7700K for another year or so. None of the processors on the market right now are going to give you a huge boost for gaming over the 7700K. Not enough of a boost to justify spending the money imo. A 3600K is going to give you around the same performance in gaming as the 7700K, and the only way you're going to see a difference with the 9900K is if you're running an RTX 2080 TI at 1080p anyway. If you have a 2080 TI, then I sincerely hope you're running a higher resolution monitor, in which case, you're not going to see any performance difference at all between the 3600, 7700K, or 9900K. Just keep the 7700K, and see what AMD comes out with next year. If you want more gaming performance now, then buy a GPU.
