The old sound of incoming messages

So, I know this is a bit of an odd one, but I was just wondering... Hope someone here can answer

You know that kind of buzzing sound we used to hear on radios and TVs, when a mobile phone close to the speakers was about to receive a message or a call... Well I think I haven't heard it in years, and just recently I heard it again on an old  video from 2009 on Youtube. That made me wonder, what exactly was that sound in the first place and how come we never hear it anymore ?

RF interference getting picked up by speakers or microphones.

The electro-magnetic field produced by electronics induces a current in the coil of a speaker. This moves the magnet thus creating the hum or buzzing.

As it just happens, audio equipment is pretty good at picking up the 800-900MHz frequency used by GSM. So your entire speaker wire essentially turns into a giant antenna for those signals. That coupled with the burst of the initial negotiation for time slots created the distinct buzzing sound.

 

The reason we don't hear it nowadays is because we have moved away from TDMA, and mostly moved away from the 800-900 GMZ spectrum as well.

 Plus, audio equipment is probably better shielded these days than they used to be.

I still get a similar sound if I place my mobile (Motorola 4G) right on top of or just in front of my mixing console.  It's been so long since I have heard it I though I had noisy preamps and started to shit myself (it was literally an 30 min before a wedding).

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.

The shielding only reduces the volume and distance though.  Old cellphones still have no trouble getting modern speakers to buzz if you place them within 1.5-2 feet.
