Barcode Scanner over WiFi network??

Long shot here, but have any of you guys dealt with a barcode scanner that can work over WiFi network that is basic? I know of many many different scanners, but I won't a simple one that will input barcodes into a simple text field in a google doc., so nothing major. 

 

Is there such a beast?

Haven’t dealt with wifi personally, Bluetooth yes; the little Motorola / Symbol CS3000.

 

How far away is the scanner from the computer? Might Bluetooth work?

I'll have over 300ft of distance which will rule out most of the bluetooth/"wireless" connections. The issue I am having is that the only WiFi enabled scanners are Android, or some type of OS installed, but in my head, I picture a docking base that charges and runs initial setup for the scanner to have a NIC card that is connected over the WiFi network with not touchscreen, or "expensive" items that can easily be broken.

 

Maybe you and I just need to go into business together and make this happen.

Honestly I would just write a very simple program in C++ or Python that sends it however you like. That way you can have a wireless scanner that plugs into a raspberry pi and then that can send it across the network or email or whatever you need

That’s a pretty big footprint, and it would probably be hard to guarantee reliable wireless coverage for that area unless it’s an open field or there are a lot of wifi access points for a warehouse.

 

A pretty typical solution would be to use a device (traditionally called a PDE) to capture and cache the data in case the network is temporarily unavailable or unreliable. It could Periodically upload it to a database “somewhere” which could be polled in real-time or however often you need it by even google sheets.
 

A simple front end on an iOS/Android/PDE, or a raspberry pi based “dumb” device would also work and be cheaper (if maybe overkill).

You could just use RS485 .... basically a twisted pair of wires.

RS485 works up to 4000 ft as long as the wires are thick enough. For 300ft you'd probably be able to do more than 1 mbit of transfer.

If you want wireless, the old 2.4 Ghz 802.11 b  (11mbps) or g (54mbps) can technically go up to 300ft . With a directional antenna or maybe if you add a signal booster / repeater somewhere in the middle, it would be doable to use wireless.

Sorry for the delayed response. I was attempting to find a "simple" scanner that I can use to scan basic 1D-2D barcodes to input data into a spreadsheet. Instead of using a BT, or some other type of wireless connection, I would instead use it to run over our massive wireless network to communicate to the PC.

I've never seen a WIFI one. Barcode scanners are essentially keyboards. You might be able to find a Tablet with an integrated barcode scanner, but not for cheap.

 

If you're scanning items into a Google Doc, I'd recommend getting either a cheap Android Tablet w/ a Bluetooth Scanner, or a cheap Windows Laptop and a Bluetooth (or USB) scanner.

 

Just open the doc on the tablet/laptop, and do your thing. Tablet would be easiest workflow.

 

Most oldschool portable standalone scanners don't run something that is capable of opening a Google Doc (usually an old version of Windows CE).

A lot of these scanners have serial ports, or show up as usb keyboards ,,, when you scan a barcode, the device dumps a string of characters and maybe some control codes.

 

It would be fairly easy to read the serial stream with a ESP32 (arduino like with wireless) and send it over the air to another one or a website on the network or whatever or simply behave like a web page and put the last scans on a page. Then have a software or something on the other computer that scans the page every 5s or so and gets the last scan.
