Either way, this bot sent a lot of community the same message.

As you can see, the PM was sent to you and 31 others. If one of these 31 people reported it, the staff here can see the PM and remove it. That is probably what happened (because it is not in my past PM's either)

Yeah this started yesterday as far as I'm aware. Got a message from Emas595. Seems to be clearing up fine though as far as I can tell by the Status Updates. Everyone was blowing up about it.

wait, you got one? o_o my theory on them going alphabetically is bunk then

My theory was them going by account number. (ie. Me: #313534, You: #486687) then counting either +1 or -1 but checking accounts #313533 & #313535 neither were on my list of 31 other recipients.

It's possible via a script it created a table of all the existing user accounts then randomized recipients. That's a possibility.

I didn't check the acc #'s of the other people so I can't say for sure if they didn't just use a value other that +1/-1 for my first theory.

And now the message is gone (probably cause I reported it) so I can't test it.

You probably had an email notification for private messages enabled, and the message may not be visible because the spam accounts and their contents were removed as quickly as we could.

This issue has been resolved. For now at least. You can continue discussion about the incident in linked thread.

We apologize for inconvenience. Besides the attack itself, this has shown there's issues with PM email notifications. I would highly recommend that you unsubscribe or turn off any such notification here and everywhere else. Or create local filter to keep them away from your main inbox.

If you encounter any other spam, please report it as soon as possible so we can deal with it.
