I recently upgraded to gigabit internet through Xfinity and as part of the plan, they gave me a modem/router that they said could handle those speeds, however I have tested my speeds (both over Ethernet and Wi-Fi) and I'm barely touching 100mbps. These tests have been performed on a range of devices including a laptop, my gaming PC, an iPad Pro and an iPhone XS. The speeds are almost always identical and are only off by 1-2mbps every test.

Do I need a new router/modem for these speeds or is there something going on with my service from Xfinity? I'm not too informed when it comes to networking, so any help would be appreciated.

I think it's safe to assume the modem they provided is capable of the speed you bought but for your devices to be stuck at ~100mbit sounds like a mis-configuration in the unit. It may be a setting you can adjust it may be something you can only fix by contacting the ISP.

What you can check is if there's any bandwidth limit set for wired/wireless devices. If you can find those and they're set to Unlimited/Auto/None then you'll probably want to call your ISP as there isn't much more you can do by yourself.

EDIT:

Also are you certain it's mbps or is it MBps? Big difference.

Have you tried logging into your router and checking if bandwidth limit is set to 100Mbps?

You would think that the modem they offer is cabable of those speeds, but I could be wrong. I've been looking over all the different settings within the modem's control panel and I can't find much related to network speeds. I doubt the speeds are slow due to my device's bandwith limits because I'm seeing the exact same speed on all devices and I know for a fact that some of those devices are capable of handling higher bandwidth.

That's what I'm looking into now, but the router/modem they gave me is designed so terribly that it's taking me a while.

Anything modern that is wired should be capable of at least 1000BASE-T (gigabit). What site are you using for your speed test?

I've tried Ookla and Xfinity's speed tests. Both resulted in a speed of around 72mpbs.

If you've already checked inside the router and there's no limiters set on the LAN/WLAN then you'll have to call your ISP. There's not much else you can do.

I worked for Xfinity as a CommTech, doing installs and troubleshooting. Hopefully they gave you an XB6 (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Xfinity_XB6-T_1_2018-07-11.jpg) or else you ain't going to get Gigabit speed. Second, there's a system file on the router that tells it what speed to cap it at, if this was an upgrade from a previous speed it's possible they didn't update the configuration file, you'll have to call to confirm. Third, there could be 'noise' on your lines or the signal is either too low or too high when it reaches your house. That would require a tech to come out and check your lines (should have been done when you upgraded). Last, double check connections including the coax into the wall and outside attached to your house, something could be loose.

Give Xfinity a call and talk to them to verify your config file, then have them send a tech out if that fails. You shouldn't be charged for the visit if it's their fault.

First of all what is the model of the combo unit they gave you? Second call them and see if they can push the 1Gbps config file to the combo unit. Sounds like the wrong config file was flashed.

Now all that being said, keep in mind you paying a rental fee on that combo unit. You can buy a D3.1 modem for like $150-$200 and then buy a router.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

Thanks for the info. I’ll give them a call today and see what they say. Hopefully it’ll be an easy fix.

Thanks! I’ll give that a shot.
