WordPress/Automattic Buys Tumblr For A Lot Less Than Verizon/Yahoo Paid For It.

TheNamelessOne

Wow, I'm not surprised that the value tanked after the porn ban but holy shit, that's gotta be a new record in mismanagement. Personally I only used it for porno and even then only rarely, so I haven't had a reason to login since the ban and there's no way I'm going back either.

The difference in purchase price and sale has little to do with the porn ban.

Yahoo's ownership of Tumblr, in four acts:

2013: Yahoo buys Tumblr for $1.1b, promises to "not screw it up"
2018: Yahoo, in an effort to please advertisers, announces that NSFW content will be banned from Tumblr

2018: The ban goes into place and Tumblr loses 30% traffic

2019: Verizon, Yahoo's parent company, sells Tumblr for 2% of what Yahoo originally bought Tumblr for

You're giving Verizon 10% more credit than they deserve.
They decimated it - twice. Mostly literal sense of decimate (cut to one tenth).

That's slightly worse than the figure I gave.

Decimate meant to remove 1/10th. So 1 in 10 soldiers in a roman legion would be summarily executed. Killing 9 in 10 soldiers would defeat the purpose since they would just have to form new legions.

20 million dollars in terms of large company buy-outs is the equivalent of buying a company for a paperclip and a piece of string.

Tumblr at this point should jut create an adult version of their website. This way all the porn and hentai can go to the adult website and the cleaner stuff can stay on tumblr.

Its just too late by now. Everyone who cared about nsfw content has left and found a new home by now. The new home for me is Pillowfort.social

Its been nearly a year, and even without the new rules, tumblr had many issues leading people to leave. There is no hope for it. It will probably turn into a generic website builder and remove all the social media aspects from it.

I have to ask was tumblr really known just for porn? That's not a place that came to mind when I wanted to watch porn, there were better places.

I remember visiting some pages years ago not for porn, it was about an anime I used to like and I immediately decided to not visit tumblr ever again because it instantly played songs at max volume and that pissed me off. Plus the website itself was really slow and laggy and ugly. It felt like it was still stuck in the 90's.

And this year I went there to find some gifs of a show and I saw that it's still laggy on a modern day system WTF? and it still has the ugliest design I've seen.

I think they should just shut it down.
