I built an eBike and it tops out at around 50mph, way too fast for a standard bike helmet. So I was wondering what all the motocross and motorcycle riders wear? I have some some O'Neal motocross helmets that should do the job but I am unsure

dont use offroad helmet for road use, they are not aerodynamic and heavy.

 

for starters i always recommend hjc, a korean brand. or ls2, a chinese brand. they are cheap but still have dot and ece label, means you wouldn't go to the track wearing one, but still can save your head in the event of a crash.

 

if you live in hotter climate, a full face helmets will make you quite toasty, but argubly the safest choice. for me, i would use a modular full face helmet or 3 quarters helmet for daily commuting. currently im using an hjc 3quarters, and a bell modular for colder days.

 

i would go on for how to choose your helmet but the bottomline is, a helmet only good for one crash, the foam cracks to absorb the impact. and thats why you should not use old helmets, especially those you don't know what they been thru.

why everybody post the spec of their rig here? i dont! cuz its made of mashed potatoes!

Your problem with motocross helmets will be wind. The beak is meant for protection against dirt and muck, but will act as a wind catcher in this case. 

Some people don't care and use them for the road, so It's all up to you. 

 

Personally I'd never wear anything other than a full face, especially with an ebike, as I feel you're more likely to faceplant. 

 

HJC do someone pretty cheap but still good protection full-face helmets. 

 

Generally though, bikers tend to buy the best they can absolutely afford - which in a lot of cases is a £500 shoei, avg etc.

I've been wondering this myself actually, planning on getting a Sur Ron Light Bee X and real motorbike helmets seem like overkill but bicycle helmets seem inadequate.

Just use the MX lid you have, if you're going fast enough for wind to be a problem then you likely won't be going that fast for very long ;)

My biggest concern though is heat. As I will also be pedaling wearing this helmet so my head will get hot. That's why the motocross helmet sorta made sense because they are heavily ventilated. I also won't be going 50mph the whole time. But if the visor is causing me to strain my neck to keep my head down that's not good.

I had a helmet similar to that when i rode.  At slow speeds i had the face lifted up and at high speeds I dropped it back into place for full face protection.  Not sure if the one i linked is a good one.  Just showing the type.

Peddling in a full face ain't gonna be fun.... Christ, I get a sweat on just sat on a motorbike doing fuck all. 

 

I'd maybe go with a motocross helmet. 

 

Also the strain you'll get used to, you'll develop your neck muscles. <30mph shouldn't be a problem.

Yeah I built it. Acceleration is actually pretty linear and not too violent. I'll have to do test but it gets to full speed in a couple hundred feet

I wear an Airoh helmet personally, was €270 and has a carbon fibre shell so it's pretty light. I like it besides the wind noise

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...
