Best 2.1 Speakers either THX or non..comparson

QR25DE-SER

Hi,

I have been on the fence for several years about replacing my aging speakers.

https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Z-2300-THX-Certified-Speaker-Subwoofer/dp/B0002SQ2P2/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?keywords=logitech+z2300+thx+certified+21&qid=1557356569&s=gateway&sr=8-1-fkmr0#customerReviews

These have been out of production for a long time. I have had these for quite some time. Recently the place where you plug into the headset & control the volume the wire is either super loose or not connecting anymore I could open it up & try to fix however I dont want to wreck these speakers especially the volume control. I'm super picking on sound as I use these for games, movies & some blue ray movies. Have since upgraded to a brand new i9 machine with windows 10 64 bit. I have a good video card. However I will need to upgrade the speakers soon.. I've had them over 10 plus years & they are still going strong with exception to the control /volume control. These are logitech & would prefer to go with logitech if I can. I do need a headphone jack in the front as well of the speakers. The speakers have never crackled or anything in over 10 plus years..if you turn the bass up ..you will shake the floor as ive only done that a few times. Its great speaker system I paid I think close to $300 over 10 plus years ago.

I'm looking to something close to the sound quality but wont cost an arm & a leg.

I Know Linus has done videos on older parts. However I would like to see if he can get ahold of these old speakers & do a test & on comparison on these speakers to a new set ...either from logitech or another company.

I know the older logitech products some are better than others. I've been trying to upgrade my speakers since the volume control cable has started to not working . It can be frustrating a bit when you only hear one side.

I have also noticed that Ive had to turn the volume control up on the volume control...so either the controller is dying or the speakers are dying & im not noticing them. As like ive said I have had these speakers so long.

So if anyone can give a good set .. The one I was thinking about even though its not THX are the  Z337 2.1 Multimedia Speakers System w/ Bluetooth Logitech.

Also can someone explain the benifits of THX & non THX ? Do many movies use THX anymore or do they use DOLBY? I'm a bit confused on the matter.

Thanks,

QR25DE-SER  :)

I've got the Z625 too. Love mine too.

If you're interested in a product please download and read the manual first.

THX Certification is for making sure audio gear reaches a certain quality, such as frequency response or Maximum Db/Spl, Now at lets say, 200 dollars, a THX Speaker will only have a low level of THX certification. THX Specialises in certifying products to be at a certain level of quality, Dolby specialises in audio compression and standards etc. THX certification is pretty easy to achieve, for the lower THX certification. Higher level's of the certification can be pretty hard to reach. THX also does visual certification, a bit like IMAX. Klipsch make a range of THX Ultra2 certified speakers, which is a pretty hard level of certification to obtain. This is a 7.2 THX Ultra2 system: image.png.1f1fd5960c3fe33debea7e0d86424f5d.png

So as you can probably tell they get pretty loud very easily, and are required to have a certain frequency response aswell. THX Ultra2 is designed to work in rooms up to 3000 square feet, so pretty large.
The bottom line: THX is a set of regulations to get a speaker or amplifier/receiver certified to work up to a certain room size/SPL and frequency response. Its alot like IMAX for screen resolution and size in theaters, just for audio.

LTT's Resident Porsche fanboy and nutjob Audiophile.

Main speaker setup is now;

Mini DSP SHD Studio -> 2x Mola Mola Tambaqui DAC's (fed by AES/EBU, one feeds the left sub and main, the other feeds the right side) -> 2x Neumann KH420 + 2x Neumann KH870

(Having a totally seperate DAC for each channel is game changing for sound quality)

Yeah logitech only has some of the lowest THX Certification, where frequency response doesnt have to be +/-3Db 20hz-20,000 hz, so it just has to get loud basically.

It is great marketing tbh. Alot of people who aren't into audio (most people, people look at me weird when i say i spent almost 4k on headphones and the amplifier for them) think that THX just means full cinema in your room. It doesnt for low level's of certification, But if you get a decent level such as Ultra2 then it is a cinema in your room. But that is really out of reach for 99% of people. It just helps to sell the product by slapping a THX or hi-res sticker on it. THX has become a buzz-word for the most part unfortunatley.

Eh. I still don't think I will look for THX certification unless it came with Ultra1 or above. The THX AAA 789 is still pretty good though.

True. I think THX needs to remove the certification on cheaper speakers from logitech and other companies. It should hopefully encourage logitech and other cheap "pc" speaker companies/manafacturers to make better stuff, to use THX as a marketing thing again. Should bring decent audio to lower price points, which i think is needed.

I wouldn't say I'm an "audiophile" by any means.

But, I own these speakers and I love them. The sub adjustment is really nice to have - I turn it down when watching youtube or listening to certain music, and crank it UP when playing games. The sub makes explosions seem like they're that much better. The Z625s look like they're newer, and possibly have an even larger output. Of course, I don't own several different pairs of speakers to compare them to, but I'm very happy with the purchase I made.
