SSD TIER LIST

Question: OS on PCIe gen 5 SSD or PCIe gen 4 SSD?

I got all the parts for my new PC
I got 2 SSDs

1 corsair MP700 2TB
1 samsung 990pro 2TB

I also have 2 8TB sata HDDs, I do gaming and video editing

I was wondering what to keep in the corsair and what in the samsung

My plan for now is OS in the gen 5 and projects(video files)/current games in the gen 4
I saw that games see no benefit from being in a gen 5, so what makes the best use of it?

(I know it was kind of a dumb thing to buy, but it's already bought so just looking for opinions on what to keep where)

Does anyone have a recommendation on a sata ssd of 4tb or more? I looked at the 870 evo and Qvo but read a lot about problems where the disk died super early and had a lot of errors. Help would be hugely appreciated!

Is the ADATA XPG SX8200 PRO good? Im going to use it as an extra storage for my laptop and maybe as an external SSD(in a enclosure of course) in the future.

No, it has so many versions, earlier being good and latter not remarkably good.

Here where I reside the Adata S70 Blade costs just a tad more, but is solid option. Being fast and affordable.

I edit my posts more often than not

are you looking for 2.5" SATA or NVME m.2? what are your current specs for your PC?

More often than not it has QLC, I'd skip.

NM620 is still TLC. ADATA is new, there are no reviews so it's hard to tell anything about this drive.

most anything from crucial is good. along with Samsung, western digital and seagate.

P3 isn't good. P3 Plus also. E21T it's lowend controller an QLC 176L Micron nands.

Honestly, the Legend is better but you probably won't notice most of the differences. Both companies engage in downgrading their products' quality after getting great reviews, so it's best to buy products you can trust or pay more when they're new. That said, you'll get a better deal with the WD Black SN850X or the Kingston Fury Renegade. If you get the 2 TB, it's even better as stats are typically better than smaller SSDs. I hope that helps.

No, no, no.

Legend has strange nand conected and less iops although SM2264F is quite good controller. KC3000 has good controller E18 and same Fortis  B47R. Fury Renegate technically is the same that KC3000. Difference is in firmware - pSLC more agressive and Over Provissioning to small hardware buffer.

Welcome to the SSD tier list.

SSD or Solid State Drive is a storage device containing non-volatile flash memory, used in place of hard drive because of its much greater speed. Unlike a hard drive, a solid state drive doesnt have any moving parts. It has two main components - A flash controller and  NAND flash memory chips.

More information on solid state drives can be had from here..

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solid-state_drive

This guide differentiates SSDs in different tiers based on their DWPD, sustained writes, controllers and NAND types.

Underline denotes the best SSDs in their respective tiers.

SSD's without DRAM cache are marked with an asterisk *

NOTE - MANY MANUFACTURERS ARE REPLACING THE KEY COMPONENTS OF SSDS (CONTROLLERS & NAND FLASH) WITH INFERIOR COMPONENTS WITHOUT INFORMING THE GENERAL PUBLIC. THIS LIST IS BASED ON THE COMPONENTS (CONTROLLERS & NAND FLASH) THAT THE SSD CAME WITH  AT THE TIME OF LAUNCH.

How does the Solidigm P41 Plus 2TB M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 NVMe Gen4 Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) SSDPFKNU020TZX1 rank?  I only see the P44.

I've been using computers since around 1978, started learning programming in 1980 on Apple IIs, started learning about hardware in 1990, ran a BBS from 1990-95, built my first Windows PC around 2000, taught myself malware removal starting in 2005 (also learned on Bleeping Computer), learned web dev starting in 2017, and I think I can fill a thimble with all that knowledge. 😉 I'm not an expert, which is why I keep investigating the answers that others give to try and improve my knowledge, so feel free to double-check the advice I give.

My phone's auto-correct is named Otto Rong.🤪😂

are you looking for 2.5" SATA or NVME m.2? what are your current specs for your PC?

Hey! An update: now I really need new drives 1 failed completely of my 1 tb hdd and one 2tb has a warning in crystaldisk. I have a ryzen 5 3600, ASUS PRIME B350-PLUS, 32 gb ddr4 ram 2133Mhz or 3200Mhz don't remember tbh I think 3200 but it isn't working for some reason, never has. I also have a asus 1070 8gb, Main ssd for windows atm has been since 2016 a samsung 850 evo 250gb. My motherboard should support gen3 PCIe ssd, but some people seem to have issues online with a ryzen 5 3600, but I could be wrong. Looking forward to your reply!

your PC will support gen3 but it may not support gen4. my pc is an intel i7 8700k from 2018 so i know mine supports gen3 NVME as i had to get a new storage device for my OS as that is what failed for me several months ago. you should not have any issues just swapping out the old with a new of the same kind but your PC is a little old and i would think about upgrading it.

Upgrading in what way do you mean? And by swapping out the old what do you mean? My sata ssd?

personally if it was me, i would be looking to upgrade/replace everything with all new stuff but i know most people cant just do that every couple of years and have to save for months or years to afford it. your CPU and motherboard are not that old so should be ok for a few more years. i think what you should look into repalcing would be your case and storage to allow for more storage to have more than 1 backup but looking at the specs of your baord, its not really possible with your board only having 4 SATA3 slots and 1 of those most likely taken up by the m.2 SSD you have.

My motherboard has 6 sata slots. Sata 5 and 6 is deactivated when using a m.2

for what i understand (not much i admit) on intel boards its SATA 1 is replaced when using a m.2 but i just bought myself the asus ROG strix b650e-f gaming wifi board with a ryzen 9 7950x 3d with 64GB of gskill flare x 5 RAM. going to put it together this weekend. or planning on it once i get a decent CPU cooler as my current one will not work as if i wanted it to as its 10 years old now.

 Lexar NM790 4TB is the best(price)/optimal PCIe 4.0 NVMe for ~215€?

Or what are the thoughts on NM790?

Posting this to add more info and database input. In case it is needed or somethin.

ADATA Gammix S70 Blade 1TB

Bought new 26 August 2023, cloned my Windows 10 into it.

Proceeded to use DiskMark right after cloning was done and NVME is installed onto motherboard.

It shows as 476GiB on diskmark because I split the partition.

Installed and bench-ed in an airflow case with :

2 x 140mm & 1 x 120mm Noctua redux fans going at 45% for intake.

Ambient was around 24 celcius.

Installed WITHOUT any heatsink.

Temp wise, it's hot, 57c at idle, went up to like 66c when diskmark going. Heard it's normal for gen 4 to go hot, idk, this is my first Gen4 NVME.

Do let me know if there is other test someone would like me to do. I'll see if I can help with it.

Hi, I'm just finishing off my parts list for a new build, would love suggestions for the following 3 m2 slots

4TB  primary OS/steam/video/allthethings drive.

4TB Steam library file, modded games and so on x 2

The motherboard is a high end AM5 x670e with 4 m2 slots (one will be filled with a Sabrent 4TB Rocket plus (yes I know the shared resources on the last slot but only one PCIE will be filled)

Basically I want to put 12TB into this PC and pretty much forget about storage for a long while.

Thank you for any suggestions.

I would recommend putting that in a new post instead of adding it here. Most people don't look here.
