The sad state of the American news media...

steelo

I noticed this last night after doing a google search about the Dayton, OH mass shooting. If you search information about the gunman in Dayton on google, one of the results is a CNN article, "A Twitter account that appears to belong to Dayton mass shooter Connor Betts retweeted extreme left-wing and anti-police posts, as well as tweets supporting Antifa, or anti-fascist, protesters." It appears google has since updated the link, but I was able to take a screen shot yesterday evening. Click link below to see a screenshot of my search results.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/15QHA7LzgaCbsBr6CBS7zxLRuPdXMzYZY/view

However, when you actually click the link to go to the CNN story...https://www.cnn.com/2019/08/05/us/c...

CNN completely changed the headline to remove any mention of the shooter being left-wing and supportive of Antifa (I believe) because it doesn't fit their narrative. Apparently, google was a little slow updating the link.

Does anybody else see anything very wrong with this? Now, I'm not a conspiracy theorist and really can't stand either side of the political spectrum, but this is just sad. I honestly believe the mainstream media does everything it can to manipulate what it reports.

They didn't remove it, it's still there:

Quote

Former high school classmates said that he had a "hit list" of people he wanted to kill or rape. He was in a "pornogrind" band with extremely graphic, violent lyrics. And authorities searching his family home found writings that expressed an interest in killing people, two law enforcement sources told CNN.

But the writings did not indicate any racial or political motive, sources said.

In addition, a Twitter account that appears to belong to Betts retweeted extreme left-wing and anti-police posts, as well as tweets supporting Antifa, or anti-fascist, protesters.

However it seems that the shooting itself was not politically motivated, or at least there is no clear evidence that it was.

From the witnesses' accounts it seems that it was more the random action of a madman flipping out than anything political, but that remains to be confirmed.

So... it seems to me you have a narrative here

Exactly where did I state anything about political motives in my OP? I simply pointed out that CNN edited in their original headline to omit certain details about how the shooter was an extreme leftist who supported Antifa, Why? Who knows.

Hate to break it to you, but I'm not getting into a political argument with you. I really, really don't care where you stand politically or whether you have a motive, the information is all right there.

I'm curious if you feel the same way about the shooter in Texas.

Probably because as more information came in it seemed less relevant to the story.

So... if you don't care about political motives why would you point this out as such a disgrace? News outlets edit their titles all the time for various reasons, why is this different?

Oh really? You think this is an unbiased reading of the situation?

Hmmm...it's interesting that the news outlets seem to obsess over the shooter in TX being an extreme-right winger....but that's 'relevant' information, right?

So, are you implying that one is worse than the other? Oh, that's right...it's irrelevant that the shooter in OH was a leftist. What I am pointing out here is how the American media attempts to make one side look worse than the other. Any extremist is bad. Period.

I'm sorry that I'm not complying with your George Orwell 1984 narrative.

Whats annoying me is that the media is blaming it on violent video games, I play all the 'bad' ones (CoD, GTAV, Fortnite) and I've clocked well over 1000 hours in each and I play more games that are considered violent. And I'm 14 but I've never wanted to shoot up a Walmart or a school or something. I wouldn't be able to anyway as I live in UK, but theres a huge problem with knife crime over here, my close friend got stabbed but I've never wanted to carry a knife or harm anyone, even the person who stabbed my friend.

That entire debacle was beyond stupid. I honestly believe we have a serious mental health problem in America.

You mean the one who left a manifesto about hispanic people invading the country and referencing a well known political shooting where the guy explicitly said it was politically motivated? You tell me.

See above, the link between his political ideas and the shooting is much more marked than this one, at least for the time being. Note that this isn't my opinion, it's what the police has reported. Still, this isn't 100% confirmed yet - I will give it "the benefit of the doubt" at least as far as politics is concerned.

...no? I'm saying that one of them seems more likely to be politically motivated than the other, hence why the news is reporting it as such.

You, on the other hand, seem to be very invested in declaring this a left wing conspiracy and insinuating that it's worse than the El Paso shooting.

I totally agree with you there. What surprised me was I was on Snapchat and the Washington Post were saying that violent video games were not the problem.

So, let me get this straight...a self-declared leftist (on social media) who was anti-cop and pro-Antifa wasn't at all politically motivated to commit a mass shooting?

Color me doubtful.

There are quotes from Trump saying this. On the other hand I don't see it in the CNN article though I could have missed it.

Let me get this straight, just because someone has a certain political view does it mean that every action they do is politically motivated? So next time a right winger commits any sort of crime I can say it's politically motivated too and blame it on his political ideas? This is a very stupid argument.

Good.

We have a mental health crisis in America exacerbated by the toxic political climate.

Not at all, you mentioned that Trump made a statement that video games are to blame. I replied in saying that I disagreed and then stated that I believe we have a mental health crisis in our country compounded by the current political atmosphere.

So, I ask you...exactly what was the question you were attempting to convey?
