I tried to watch float plane to get LTX vids and can't get past a *VERY* bland "Log in / registration Screen".

Most media platforms are just click and watch.

All I get is a corporate style screen with forced login (which everybody hates, including Linus re: Bethesdsa and Nvidia drivers)

I hope this changes. I *think* there might be good vids on there but, quite frankly, I have no idea and I wont be able to confirm it until it's free to watch with no registration required.

That's because Floatplane is a paid platform.

If you want access to the videos on Floatplane, you have to sign up and pay the $3 (soon to be $5, or it might have even changed by now)

Most videos on Floatplane end up on YouTube after a week or two, but the LTX videos are Floatplane exclusive so unfortunately wont make their way to YouTube (unless someone reuploads them)

Good that the vids are eventually available on YouTube. Shame that Floatplane is a sub thing. I'm money conscious and *NEVER* sign up to Direct Debit monthly subs on *Anything* apart from heating and water for my home. I have no idea why Floatplane is a paid platform.

Charging creators *AND* watchers is not gonna work for me. Ever.

It's called early access with some exclusive launches as well and it's to support creators that you want to support above and beyond the usual youtube platform, where more and more people run adblock, PLUS they get a bigger and more direct cut of the subscription (I believe all of the sub money aside processing costs for payment or something)

Floatplane doesn't charge creators - Floatplane gets some of your money (I don't know what fraction), and the creator gets the rest. The idea of joining Floatplane is to support the creator, and get videos early and ad-free in return.

You have misunderstood it. FP has been subscription based from start. And made just for that, to be able to give creators steady flow of money while serving their dedicated fans quality content.

I understand your *fear* of subscriptions. There are options, however. Prepaid credit cards for one. You load card with set amount, lets say $10. That gives you 3 months of LTT videos after which card expires and service will be automatically cut off. Or you can pay for one month and unsubscribe immediately afterwards. I've done this to multiple services offering free month for CC details.

Maybe for consumers it should be made obvious (Line 1 paragraph1) on the home screen as you described. It's *very* daunting to do a "Sign up" without any explanation of costs etc. TY for the explanation.

Addendum - I don't mind paying content creators, if and when I have the means to do so. There is *no way* I can pay monthly, let alone *every month* so unfortunately I'll not be subscribing and I'll have to miss out. Shame :(

Perhaps this model isn't designed for me; a bit like sports being behind a "Pay Wall".

Tech News for the rich, when many people watch to glean information to get good value components, is bizarre.

I wish the platform well, but not for me unfortunately. :(

Floatplane is a Patreon for videos, you get access by paying.

If you're complaining you have to log in and/or pay then you don't understand what it is... just go to YouTube.

Yeah, it isn't for you from the sound of it, it isn't for me either but for different reasons. The vast majority of what is going on there is going on Youtube for free a week(ish) later. New releases and things like that are generally uploaded (this would of course by creator specific as it is entirely up to them) to Floatplane and Youtube simultaneously. It is not "Tech News" for the rich. It's 'Tech News' for those who don't mind ponying up a bit of extra money to the creators they like.

That's fine by me. Early adopters, for those that can afford it, is *absolutely fine*.

Few "high end" components would ever make it to budget conscious consumers without them.

As long as all FP content is available later, and not behind a pay wall" I have *no problems* with it.

I agree, and I have whined about that since service went to open beta. I've also complained about their lack of communication towards community about updates for service and LMGs part of it. Currently only way of keeping up is to watch WAN show. I'm almost 2 months behind on those. So the fact that app has launched was news to me.

You are being bit too harsh there. Since one must do actual research to even know how service works. It isn't explained that well. People are just told to join without explanation what it means.

I suppose... Then again it's not like the (despite lacking) advertises about FP don't specifies the paid nature of the service... Well my apologises nonetheless.

Its bit both ways. Like I said in my post, WAN Show is pretty much only place (besides forums) where one can find accurate information about the service, and even there they don't emphasize enough that its paid service, and you pay per creator, and you can't view any videos without paying. Those being the things EVERYONE asking about the service want to know. And about which they complain. Meaning that there just isn't enough even basic information.

No arguments.

------------------------------

Re - FP

Be honest with a product.

Inform the customer What the deal is *Top of Page*

I will retract my previous comment :-

"I wish the platform well, but not for me unfortunately. :( "

The more I think about it; the more I hope it fails. I can't afford to pay subs. I'll sub or donate games on the occasion when I can. This is gonna be a tough sell for consumers..

----------------------------------------------

Re LMG:-

I understand the ad stuff and Youtube tax ... Limitations, quality...

Linus wants to support his employees. LMG has always been designed to be a business. Reviews are balanced and well thumbnailed, Product Sponsorship is transparent and fun to watch.  (Great scope of talent (Love Anthony)

All these things are laudable.

Don't paywall me though, man.

Considering what is behind the "Great Wall of Payments", you aren't loosing that much. I mean the LTX panels might be only thing someone might find interesting, but rest of BTS stuff isn't that interesting. And everything else is posted to YT or streamed on Twitch.
