When upgrading ram what do I need to do?

Okay so I want to upgrade my ram from 8gb (4gbx2) to 16gb and I'm just wondering if there is any thing I need to be looking for or can I get any ddr4 ram and slap it in?.. it's for gta v when playing in noticing my ram is on 90% and my game is lagging.. I have an i5 6500 and a gtx 1060 6gb if that matters.

My mobo only has space for 2 sticks of ram so I'll sell the 2x4. The mobo is ASUS H110M-K H110 and I dont know if I should get a single ram module or a 2x8 kit

you should always buy ram in kits, so yes, 2x8 ram kit

 

the ram this way can be accessed faster by the cpu

 

the whole idea is buy the ram, when ram arrives, turn off pc, remove old ram, put new ram, turn on pc, enter in bios, check it is runing at the right speed and not at 2133 and then go into windows and enjoy

check the asus site, this motherboard is for ddr4 2400mhz, not ddr3, but there is confusion because asus also mentions ddr3

Also, make sure the new ram is on the motherboard's QVL (qualified vendor list). If it's not, there's no guarantee it will work.

almost always the ram i buy is never listed on those lists

 

the qvl just means that vendor had those modules listed at hand and the said modules worked, doesnt mean other modules will work or not, just that they tested those, nothing more

Just you wait. One of these days you'll get some sticks not on the list and will have to run them at a significantly lower speed or not work at all. Happened to me. Regardless, I said there's no guarantee. Not that they for sure won't work. It's always best to be safer than sorry. No use in arguing against this logic when helping someone less knowledgeable.

its not argue, take into consideration that when someone is looking for parts, usually on stores is common to never find the part you point them to buy, so people panic and dont buy anything

 

for most people the list is limited, then you get the economical limitations and finally the availability limitations

 

so my point is that you shouldnt find ways to limit someone options and qvl lists should not exist, because it is supposed that all parts are designed to follow standards and no one should have to test stuff to see if it works, all things should work

 

btw dont say argue when someone disagrees with you, this is not arguing, these are points of view between people trying to help, all in a friendly environment
