HDD's are widely used in servers and surveillance storage because of their high storage capacity for a low price point.

I only see them ending when you can get an SSD with that much storage and not having it cost a fortune.

Yes, there will come an end to them at some point. When? No one knows, but I'd assume at least ten more years.

They're still very good for some purposes.

For example imagine a website with lots of images (imgur, facebook etc) or small clips (twitter, vine)

You can have images cached in various locatios depending on popularity (how often acessed)0

hottest = ram , next hottest =  ssd, less hot = hdd,  archival=tape drive

 

Anyway i think these are shingled ... which means slow  writes...
