How much thermal paste should I put on a 8700k

For any CPU, use a pea drop of paste, and clamp down, so it will spread it across the CPU evenly.

This is highly argued, but I wouldn't worry about spreading it, leads to unnecessary mess. Pea sized amount in the middle of the chip, then clamp down your heatsink. The heat and clamping force will spread it for you.

haven't you already been using your 8700K?  From the swatch of posts you made about temps, you've been using it a while.

 

Also, thermal paste is the rice/pea size.

 

EDIT: Looks like you're reinstalling a cooler?  Btw, I am not sure I believe the 68c in AIDA64 claim in that thread.  Way too cool for a stress test.

 

Also watch some build videos, their are some very good ones that cover everything you need to know.

It is better to use too much than too little. Too much will just squeeze out the sides. As long as it is not liquid metal, that doesnt do any harm.

 

I would do a bit more than that on the photo. like 1.5X.

 

Testing has shown that too much yields EXACTLY the same results in temperatures as "just right".

 

But too little is NOT good, since you don't get full coverage of the heatspreader.

Small dot method, while not bad, leaves too much of the IHS exposed sometimes. And with these long dies, it's good to make sure you have full coverage.

On larger cores that also run hotter, many people recommend either a "X" (diagonal to diagonal intersecting) pattern or a + pattern (edge to edge along the middle).  I use the X method and I found it's about 1-2C cooler that way compared to small dot in the middle.  For any -direct die- applications however, any paste MUST be spread, no exceptions.

For the future just spread your paste and you will never doubt if its enough or too much. 
Then again you aint really going to see a big difference if its too much. Too little is bad. 
But you only need a fine layer spread out to make sure theres no Air gaps inbetween your cooler and CPU

Besides, redoing the paste over and over isn't going to net you 10's of degrees like you seem to be looking for.
