the 9211-8i and any SAS2008 cards are good for use with Unraid as with any other OS.

I'm not sure what you mean by "better" LSI HBA cards are pretty much the best....the 9311 is a 12Gbps SAS card, but still only supports 6Gbps for SATA disks, but it costs twice as much.

Has anyone used the 9211 8i card with unraid? I am looking for a HBA card and read about this one. Is there anything better around the same price? I am looking at purchasing through ebay.

Instructions for frustration management:  

1) Sit at desk.   2) Repeatedly slam forehead against desk.

Okay, thank you. I just did not know if there were any cards that are more reliable or offer better specs/features than the 9211. However, the HDDs will always be the bottleneck. Thanks for the info.

I have hundreds of servers world wide with the 9211-8i. Its pretty great and even at volume, have a very low (<1%) fallout rate after 3 years 24/7 use. There is nothing better at the 6Gbps bandwidth.

I'm new to the non-NAS NAS setups, if that makes sense.  I am looking to replace a NAS device at home with a more powerful OS like UnRAID.  I was under the impression UnRAID handled the "RAID" portion and that a RAID controller wasn't needed.

From what I gather, (I am not an expert) this is a raid and HBA card that can be put in IT mode (someone correct me if I am wrong). So it can be used as a host bust adapter (aka, adds more ports for OS to see the extra drives individually).

Ah...that makes sense.  So it becomes less of a RAID controller and more of an additional set of SATA ports.  I've seen mentions of IT Mode before.

Don't quote me on the IT Mode part, but I know this card can act as RAID or HBA card.

Correct unRAID has its own software RAID solution.

9211 isnt a proper RAID card, its primarly just a basic HBA. The only RAID you should ever really do on these types of cards is a basic RAID1 or RAID0.

The 926x/927x is the RAID version of the card with memory, cache battery, etc....for more advanced RAID like RAID5/6/50/60

 

For the likes of unRAID, FreeNAS, ZFSonLinux, MDADM, StorageSpaces, etc... (software RAID) you just use it in HBA passthrough (IT) mode
