Has AMD GPU gone stagnant?

R9 Fury Tri-X

RX Vega 56 8gb

Navi RX 5700 8gb

All 3 cards have comparable performance over 3 generations. Has AMD gone stagnant or is this normal to have  cards of different generations to perform the same

You're comparing high end to low end, so... yeah.

 

R9 Fury was very ahead of its time, Vega 56 is the lowest Vega desktop card you can buy, and we don't know how the RX5700 performs because it doesn't exist in the wild yet.

See, the R9 Fury and the Vega 56 basically occupy the same slot in terms of a performance bracket: the cut-down version of the top of the line, where the Fury X and the Vega 64/Frontier Edition represent the fully-loaded top of the line. Not really sure where the "high end to low end" comparison comes into play.

The R9 Fury and the R9 Fury X were the first cards to ship with HBM. It was basically AMD's answer to the 980 for the Fury and 980 Ti for the Fury X (Nvidia's top-end non-Titan card at the time). The Fury compared pretty good to the 980 and the Fury X compared decently to the 980 Ti.

Fury was test bed for using HBM memory and the technologies that make it possible to "glue" the HBM memory chips and gpu chips onto a substrate.

What they learned from that is now used on Radeon 7 and workstation cards and also may be used in the future for processors (think consoles)

 

Vega was a product that sucked because memory manufacturers just couldn't get the price of HBM2 memory chips low enough due to too high failure rates, manufacturing difficulty and so on. The vega chip itself was also a somewhat bad design, they had to "overclock" it from factory higher than they wanted to get the performance.

 

Navi ... think of what's released now as showcase for console manufacturers of a working product. It can be a smaller chip design that can be reused on consoles with minor modifications, and they can make a bigger die to compete with RX 2080 or whatever comes next.

 

Also keep in mind in case of Navi it's also preliminary drivers... future drivers will probably improve performance and some games will optimize and release patches to improve performance on Navi

And, if both PS5 and Xbox Whatever will use Navi ... games will probably be optimized for it and work better in the near future

That's like comparing

980 Ti

1070

1660 Ti

Nvidia gone stagnant as well.
