Cannot make a big partition in W10?

WarWeeny

So i have a laptop with a 1TB HDD (no SSD) and it only has 1 drive, the ? drive.

I want to make a new partition of 800~GB and leave about 130 for the OS to breathe in.

However, when i want to make a partition i can only assign 330GB~ to the new drive.

Is there a way to increase this size?

I have well over 870GB free space, so why can't i make the partition bigger?

So it's like you can't access part of a drive, which is unassigned?
When I ran into this problem, I defragged the drive (not recommend to do on an SSD, but since you are talking about a HDD that's possible) and I was able to assign the entire empty space to a certain partition.

For some reason the Windows defrag tool didn't work for this, but the Piriform Defraggler tool did work (Piriform is the same people known from CCleaner).

No i have full acces to the drive.

I just cannot make a partition of that drive larger than 330gb, when there is 870gb free.

Sorry, wasn't clear. I was actually just asking - as confirmation - your drive has 870GB of free space, you simply can only assign 330GB of that free space?
The way - as I heard - how that works, is that the information may be spread around the drive, which prevents it from going 'over' that space to create a partition.

Defragging makes it so the data is in line, making it so all the free space is lined up with each other, without any data in the middle of it.

So i am stuck with a defrag of 4 days?

Sounds like fun lol.

Oh wow, will it really take that long?
Can't remember how long it took on my 1TB HDD..

Reason by the way why I recommended Defraggler over Windows' own tool is because Windows' tool did not allow me to create a larger partition after defragging, that other program did.

i see, that would explain the sub-par partition i can make now (it finished after 3 horus or so, only gained 130 ish GB)
