Hey guys, my 2016 tournament edition black widow from razor is starting to die on me and I need a replacement. I need the USB passthrough. When I went to my local BestBuy they either had keyboards without usb passthroughs or the ones that did had exceptionally offputting switches (I think they were cherry? I didn't like them)

While I was there I got a feel for the huntsman elite, and I really liked that (though I heard there were some issues with the magnets in the hand rest messing with the keyboard). So basically, based off of this, what keyboard would you guys recommend I get? Price shouldn't be an issue.

Umm, little detail.

The Razer keyboard you have now does have cherry switches because back in 2016 it was basically the only option out there.

But a few years ago they ditched them and went for "razer green" or whatever, anyway it's a razer branded switch that's basically a cheap crappy clone.

I would either get a really cheap one from china (i have one and the switches are basically as good as cherry switches, even tho they are copies and are a lot better than razer switches) or get like a corsair one. There are a LOT of options out there, just make sure they are cherry switches.

That's really weird. When I was in the store feeling the switches, the cherry ones had no "click" to them. Is there like a "non-clicky" variant tot the chairy switches? If so, I hate it. XD

There are quite a few diffrent switches. Your keyboard probably has blues in it and you felt reds or browns.

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...

Builds:

The Toaster Project! Northern Bee!

The original LAN PC build log! (Old, dead and replaced by The Toaster Project & 5.0)

Razer switched to 'Razer mechanical switches' in the 2014 Blackwidow. I believe they have Kailh at first, Greetech later. So OP does have Razer switches (Green or Orange were the only options out at the moment).

Cherry has a couple switch options, you probably tried Red switches, which are garbage IMO.

If you want a clicky switch from Cherry, look for a board with Blue switches.

For USB passthrough, I think your only option would be the K70. The K95 is only available in Speed and Brown (brown is tactile, not clicky. You feel a bump, but not as sharp as Cherry MX Blue/Razer Green).

I can't think of many alternatives with USB passthrough though..

Razer used Razer branded Kailh and Greetech switches after 2013. They only reintroduced Cherry switches on the earlier versions of the non RGB Blackwidow X.

Or you know, you could tell them to try to avoid the options with Cherry switches and get some decent switches instead :3

There are different types of switches. The main types are clicky with a tactile bump (referred to as clicky), no click but with a tactile bump (tactile), and no click and no tactile bump (linear).

So what would be the closest type of "switch" to the one I have now (or the razor huntsman elite for that matter) that would fit the criteria? or is there any ways for me to get the same kind of keyboard again? I tried going through razers site but some portions of it are randomly outdated.

Take off a keycap and see if it the thing underneat (the keyswitch) is colored Green, Yellow or Orange. Because you asked for something clicky, I am gonna guess it will be Green, to which the Cherry equivalent would be Blue.

Otherwise you could try your luck with Razer again, but IMO 3 years is a short time for a (mechanical) keyboard to break.

On Razer's end you just get whichever switch version you have now (again, likely Green).

Probably a Blackwidow? I think those have USB passthrough.

It sounds like your current keyboard uses the Razer Green switch, so another clicky one. The Massdrop Alt or Ctrl. They have a USB-C passthrough. The switch to choose is the Box White. They are also hot swappable, so if you want to replace the switches, you can do that easily.
