How do I know which SATA3.x connector my HDD is?

c0mplexx*

I'm looking to get an M.2 SSD and my MOBOs manual shows its limited by SATA3.x type. I'm assuming my HDD is SATA3.0 but I don't know. HDD is Seagate 2TB BarraCuda SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Hard Drive (ST2000DM006)

Why is this info necessary? M.2 is m.2 dude, other technologies are just how good it performs.

Yes. M.2 is the connector type and SATA is the technology for data.

With the "X" in "SATA 3.X" are you referring to these numbers?

image.png.cf96e2c3c2df579fff487744d7f7a749.png

These numbers are just the identifying numbers for the ports, they represent as much as "port A", "port B", etc. would mean. Just an indication of what port they are talking about.

Sata 3 does not have any different numberings (like USB has with USB 3.1 and such).

So the motherboard takes SATA 3 disks, the HDD has a SATA 3 connector.

But keep in mind the ports are backwards and forwards compatible. An old SATA 2 drive would work just as well. The cables are even version agnostic, there is no 'SATA 3 cable', 'SATA 2 cable', etc.; there are just 'SATA cables'.

Anyways, when adding an M.2 SSD, keep in mind what sort of M.2 it is. It will either use the SATA or PCIE interface. These are typically listed on the product pages, but otherwise it's pretty easy to recognize. M.2 SATA are around 500/500MB per second read/write, while PCIE are usually faster. Anywhere from 1500/500 to 3500/2500MBps speeds.

Depending on which of either type you use, some ports (listed in the graph you posted) will be turned off.
