I'm looking for a 500gb ssd to upgrade an old laptop and I'm not really worried about speed or anything as anything would be leaps and bounds better than the old 5400rpm drive that is currently failing.

looking for something on the budget end any recommendations? This Silicon Power is probably the cheapest one I have found with a fair amount of good reviews. Crucial MX 500 is another one I'm looking at even though it is a bit more expensive.

To revitalize an old laptop, just get the cheapest thing you can find.  Like you said, it'll be night and day.

You'll pull a few more years out of the laptop, so it's not like you need a 10 year reliable type.

I've used SP SSD's in a few laptops for the same thing.

Both are good, I've used both and you wouldn't see much difference so the cheaper of the two should do.

Adata su650 hands down if you need a reliable TLC SSD, don't go for QLC SSD even though they are pretty cheap.. It's QLC.. It's slower and won't last as long.

But since it's an old laptop you can just put in the cheapest SSD that you can find.

My laptop does not have a M.2 that I am aware of. My only other option would be to buy a M.2 for one of my other systems to replace my samsung 840 evo that is currently installed but don't know if a cheaper m.2 has really gotten much better than that or not.

If possible get an EVO, but if you need even cheaper then crucial is what I would recommend.

Nothing cheaper than that.

Here is another SSD to consider, the A400 from Kingston.

Another ssd not to consider. It's a 2D TLC ssd with no dram and a lot of people have reported it slowing down heavily after it only being half filled.

@striker477 I would recommend the ADATA su800 512gb for normal usage (browsing web, gaming etc. nothing that involves much file transfer). It's a proper SSD with ok-ish DRAM, high SLC cache, and is 3D TLC. Making it a step below the mx500, wd blue 3D but still fine for everyday usage and will last you a long time.

Here's a helpful SSD tier list to help out anyone next time

Why? It has the same performance and durability as the mx500 and wd blue 3D while being more expensive.

Reliability and longevity.

Everything in that SSD including the firmware is made by samsung, and millions of people use them, so the sample size to know their durability is very large.

The point is that the EVO is higher quality and won't slow down as much over the years.

The WD SSDs are pretty crappy though.

really depends on what kind of performance op wants.

the slow down really doesnt matter in daily use, only not for productivity / large files transfer.

You should have seen how horrible it was with kingston SSDs.
