Programming - Real world projects to practice

I've read that the best way to learn programming is through getting stuff done (personal projects) and there's plenty of ideas for beginner projects out there, I've done a couple, and while they might work... they work in my way, because I get them to work with the current knowledge that I have, without proper guidance, a good recipe for bad coding practices.

 

I know the basics of C++ and C#, that is: loops, functions, classes, data types, arrays, file handling, etc.

I feel like I just got taught how to say: Apple, Red, Jump, Dog, then I were told to repeat them until I'm able to write down an essay, am I making sense?

 

What's the next step? I honestly feel stuck.

 

I just have a couple hours a day to put into learning programming, so I would rather put them to good use by properly learning a language by doing real world projects or something along the lines.

 

Do you guys have any suggestions or courses in mind? I don't earn much, but I can always save up some money if it's worth it :)

I would personally stick with C++

It will have higher pay going forward, as its a "aging" language

As for what to do, I would make an application

This could be a game (UE 4 has great C++ support) or anything really

The best way I have learned about a language is actually writing the data structures myself. It's not practical as the ones written in the language will be the best option but truly understanding what's going on underneath and what to use when and more importantly why will make you a great programmer. Also learning how to use git and collaborate with others remotely helps too. Learning libraries and more specific things like maybe CUDA or machine learning are great tools for the future.

Just keeping this here as a Best way to practice programming is to use challenges. Making aplication requres imagination, and that takes time. 
However there are plenty of sites asking for solutions for certan problems, that are smaller, do not requre imagination and on top of it you can look what other people did, and improve your code.

I have learned programming by studying all alone from the time that you had to buy printed books and with no internet not to mention even without faxes!!!!!! but anyway learning is always the same. IF you want to LEARN you have to proceed with this first GENERAL IDEA:

1) Decide what you want to start programming. Nowadays the field is basivally huge! You want to program games, Databases, General Desktop applications, Web Sites and Applications, system programming? Deciding what field will lead you to the language to learn and choose!

2) After deciding the field you want to start with you choose the Programming Language and stick with it till you learn to do something usefull with it in the field you chose!

3) After you learned the basics start to learn the advanced futures of the language i.e. connect to databases, read streams, etc. if you decided games then the low level would be to learn the 2d design and then as advanced learn 3d programming library for the language.

4) Last Design from scratch an application in the field you learned all this time. You may be doing it in parallel with the previous steps this one and enrich it.

 

Some general ideas as to what i would do :

1) If you want to go network/web/Desktop/databases Learn C# or Java. C++ is good but it is better for system and game programming. Though Java and c# can help too here.

2) BUY a BOOK for beginners then for advanced programming! or have only one online source of documentation and mainly the official one to read! Starting reading forums and stackexchange will overwelm you and will just stall you for hours gussing what is the correct and what it is not in the chat fights!!! PROGRAMMERS LEARN ONLY BY THEIR MISTAKES AND NOT BECAUSE THEY WERE PROVIDED THE SOLUTION! That way the only thing you can achieve is to forget what you have copied the next minute or hour!!

3) Use and IDE that is helpful as much for the beginner. Yeah ok you will look great in notepad++ and run console compiling BUT you want to learn and not build the wheel from scratch. you can then come to that level of complexity IF you ever need to!

4) With programming always a prestep is design what you want to build in paper. One application to start work with designing is always an Address Book for your contacts or in field of games a text adventure game. Addrers book has nice curve in learning Web or Desktop programming.

5) if you get errors try to follow line by line the debugger NOT the stackecxhange. NullPointerException will be your nightmare....BUT it will learn you a lot as to what you did wrong.

Too many but it is a big subject you requested help for.

AS what companies ask in the company field....here where i live, mainly web / desktop java, c# and databases use for them (like mssql, mysql and postgres, Mongodb)

Programming is continuous learning dont think you will have learned anything in 6 months....one change in language version and you may have to forget something you did all the previous time!!!!!

 

 

PS 1: There are many AddressBooks out there why do i have to plan one of my own.....You will surely ask it to yourself!

PS 2: If you got asked the PS 1 question....then plan a Password Saver desktop application....and tell me if you can come up with the same result as in PS 1!

Try to write a C++ console application that plays a wave sound file. (The hard way, not by using the winapi "playsound" function)

  • Open the file and parse the header to get the sound format/bitrate, etc. Teaches basic file IO and parsing.
  • Read the contents of the file to memory (hint: std::vector)
  • Use SDL audio to play back the audio. Teaches including and linking against a external library, reading documentation in figuring out how to use said library, etc. Write a neat RAII lock to engage when handling callbacks. Basic sample rate conversion when the wave file sample rate and the sample rate you got from SDL don't match (simple sample duplication/dropping will suffice).

That'll get you going for a fair bit.

I actually decided to take a step back, I feel like beginning with a high level language wasn't the right choice for me, at least.

So I will learn C first, then move back to C++ / C#.

 

I also enrolled in the CS50 course :) (it's free), it might take me a long time to finish but I hope it's worth it!

 

P.S: That teacher is amazing, any beginners out there reading this, should take a look at that course too.

ah, good old Havard CS50. I definitely recommend it for anyone who is interested in compsci. It is great if you are a high school student who plans to go on to secondary education and wanted to get a feel for college-level CS course materials.

Once you have the core concepts down, the details of the language are a secondary concern at best. Unless you're working on something that's very performance critical (most things aren't) don't sweat the small stuff. I once worked on a console game project in C++ and I'd not touched C++ in over a decade (since school) so it was basically a new language at this point but because I had 10+ years of experience in a dozen other languages I learnt on the fly and was still faster and turning out solid solutions because I was a more experienced engineer, not because I knew the details of a language more intimately. For any areas I knew were performance critical I'd just ask one of the C++ vets what best practice was. 

 

IMO, being a good programmer means you're a good software engineer. Most of time in the "real world" as a programmer you're working as a team, and being a good engineer on a team means:

 

1) You can communicate well - some basic drawing skills help here - sometimes what you make is visual and you need to draw shit out to communicate well. 

2) You have a good general CS vocabulary and can simplify when necessary.

3) Good knowledge of design patterns and strong solution design skills.

4) You have a unique area of expertise that adds value to the team (UX/UI, DB design, Digital Signal Processing, Machine Learning, Realtime 3D, Micro Service API Design & Documentation etc). 

 

Learn how to draw basic model, flow and sequence diagrams. Also keep in mind that while communicating with other code slinging peers is important, you'll often need to communicate with non technical people as well (artists, designers, business stakeholders etc). Being able to simplify on the fly and use appropriate metaphors will go a long way too. If you don't know what design patterns are then hit up some books, lots around on the subject. Solution design comes with experience as it's mostly researching what existing technologies are available for you to leverage that get you closer to the project goals without building everything from scratch (and know when a from scratch solution is actually best) and what potential pitfalls your custom implementation of those technologies might have. Unique expertise is again hard when you're new but it's typically something you're really passionate about being "the best" at. Don't sweat it now, but earmark things you work on that scratch that "fuck yeah this is cool" itch and run with them when you have some free time. 

I know it's tricky getting experience working in a team when you're new but best bet would be to throw yourself into a game jam or startup/tech jam or group challenges (with friends or randoms) as MladenM mentioned. Also, I guarantee working in a team with engineers who are more experienced than you and you will learn shit so much faster. Something I wish knew when I first started coding.

Two simple projects I think are really good for programmers to make in C++ are a string class, and an integer/float parser (i.e. convert a string to a number).

 

To be clear, I'm not saying you should use them in production code, but having that intimate knowledge of how they work internally is very valuable.

Try coding exercises in K&R. Don't worry about real-world projects. I find these often do poorly in honing your problem solving and debugging skills because people write so many good APIs, you can literally reuse other people's code for common problems. Instead, try a coding challenge that tests your problem-solving skills the hard way.

Give yourself handicaps such as not having access to the c standard library. I spent 30 minutes on this problem.(im self-teaching myself c programming at the moment to prepare myself for my next semester college course that will involve a lot of low-level system programming) I learn a lot of the ins and outs doing this like truly understanding what arrays are in c, how the address is handled, and many quirks with the language like compilers do not even bother checking if your array is out of bounds, none of which can be easily noticed if you go straight coding real-world stuff.
