First hi all, this is my first post here, huge fan!

2 year old build : i7 8750, Z170A, 32 GB, 1080 ti, Evga 850 G2, SSD and many usb devices and PC received power from smart UPS

Not a single issue, mostly used for game development and play latest games.

Today it restarted while gaming. Thought it was power outage and UPS malfunctioned. Hit power off, it did not restarted, even pushing for 5 sec.

Had to power off PSU, waited and it worked fine, next 8 hours without issue.

Still get worried and was looking PSU reviews just in case when it restarted second time. This time it did not turned on. Tried power with button on MB, nothing no reaction.

When I power PSU, MB and Video lights get green but not a single reaction on power up.

From visual inspection PSU looks ok no smell of burning either.

I got 12 year old Thermaltake PSU and connected it for testing (could not connect GPU, only 1 x 6 to 8 pin cable ATM), it posted and said not enough power for GPU as expected.

I guess that’s it. I assume PSU is dead. Which PSU would you recommend? I did not build PC for a while, but remember this rule of mine that good PSU is foundation of stable system, so I rather pay more and have stable system.

thanks all in advance.

I'd recommend something like a SeaSonic Prime series, then. You can buy 650W for 100$ and it's one of the highest quality power supplies on the market (compare it to a Corsair AX as they're quite similar)

Huh, I’ve ordered this one for my sons PC last week ( will arrive tomorrow): Seasonic FOCUS Plus 650 Gold SSR-650FX 650W 80+

So pick same ? This one was replacement for 12 year old Thermaltake which started random freezes recently. I assume 650w will be more than enough for my setup too right?

Just RMA the PSU if you believe that's the issue. It has a 10 year warranty.

Are you sure this is correct?

Your CPU has integrated graphics, so you could just remove the GPU and test if it works by plugging display cables in to the motherboard.

The EVGA G2 850w has a 10 year warranty, so get in contact with EVGA and RMA it for a replacement unit.

Bad PSU won't cause the system to freeze. Issue is probably elsewhere like a dying HDD, overheating CPU, virus, etc. That said, it was still a good idea to replace a 12 year old Thermaltake PSU though.

So from my sons words ( I never experienced it, cause it happens randomly and no pattern), system freezes and continuous low sound beeping from case. We run memtest, hdd test, cpu stress for hours, reinstalled system. Sometimes it may happen while browsing or while gaming during day. Or not happen at all 2-3 days. We borrowed noname PSU from friend to test and it run fine for 1 week. After that decided to order new one.

MB is Asus Z170A + 6700K (have another CPU on different PC) , sorry bit worried now. It was my work PC and need to figure out how to resurrect and continue working asap.

You can try express RMA. They dispatch it before you send it back, and they take a deposit of the cost of the PSU until it arrives.

Not sure RMA is an option, right now I'm in EU, Georgia. Shipping it back will cost arm and leg. :(

p.s.

Thanks for a tip, was posting from phone yesterday and missed option.

Get in contact with EVGA support and see what they say. If the PSU is faulty then they may pay for the return shipping. I haven't dealt with EVGA returns, but I have had other companies email me a label I could print out to give me free return shipping to them.

Sure will try, what I have to lose? I bought it on Amazon on "August 3, 2016", so it valid for RMA.

After this, did you try the EVGA again?

Sometimes, after a hard safety latch, you need a little more than "power off, power on".  The PSU needs to be unplugged and caps allowed to drain before it works again.

i wouldnt. the Focus series from seasonic has some minor overpowerprotection issues.

tier A and above is really good.

though i would try Jonny Guru`s suggestion.

Yes on 2 different PCs. Dead is it. Cleaned up old Thermaltake toughpower 750 from dust and wired somehow ( many different adaptors used) it is holding so far until replacement arrives.
