Is there any difference between WD and Western Digital?

Andretti2019

I feel like I am going nuts over this. Some have WD in the name. Others have Western Digital. Some even have BOTH. The weird part is, that the ones that have Western Digital in the title seem to be a bit more expensive. Is WD made on a ship off the coast of China while Western Digital is made in an actual factory? Are they different companies? I even found a website that has WD AND Western Digital when choosing the brand. And it gives different results based on this.

Western Digital is the holding company, WD produces the drives.

But when referring to a harddisk drive, it's the same thing (as it is normal to call one the other and vice versa).

Do you realize WD is just the initials of Western Digital? Ever stop to look at their logo?

WD stands for Western Digital. It's like the difference between AMD and Advanced Micro Devices. Or IBM and International Business Machines. Or the FBI and Federal Bureau of Investigation, etc.

Don't look at the Brand name there. Look at the model name or the specs.

If one is labeled as WD, and the other as Western Digital, but they share the model number? Buy whichever is cheapest. They're the same.

If there are model number differences, you'll have to look at the specs of each drive to find out differences.
