Zen 2 or Zen 3 in 2020 with DDR5 RAM ?

I am ready to upgrade as Ive had this build since 2012 and it has served me well.  The Zen 2 3800x or whatever the model is does 16 core 5Ghz.  Do I jump on this or wait for Zen 3 in 2020 with DDR5 RAM support ?  Or is DDR5 coming out in 2021 or later ?  In that case I can just opt for a Zen 2.  Im thinking about ThreadRipper but the cores wont be 5Ghz more like 4.7Ghz.  Will the extra threads make up for the Mhz decrease and what not.  Thanks

Yeah sorry, Im jumping the gun.  I just dont wanna get the shaft buying a Zen 2 then 1 year later Zen 3 comes with DDR5 support.  However I have read DDR5 is 2021 or 2022 ?  Anyone have more info on the RAM situation and what not.

I answered your DDR5 questions yesterday.. with multiple factual links to launch information stating later this year, or early 2020.

Yes sorry, this was double info.. Zen 3 + RAM situation at same time.  Looks like DDR5 regardless of Zen 2 or Zen 3 is coming very soon like you said Skiiwee29 my firend.  :)

Quick Question Skiiwee29.  If DDR5 is coming at end of 2019 then what about all the Zen 2 and new gen Intel;  Their boards will only support DDR4.  So you have to upgrade to a DDR5 mobo and use the Zen 2 still ?

Zen 2 will definitely be DDR4. Intel is a bit muddier but if I was a betting man, DDR4 as well. Next gen stuff may be when we may see DDR5.

DDR4 already achieves 50GBps+ throughput. What do we need DDR5 for? Server farms with 300TB+ of data? The average consumer is fine with DDR4.

Nice post man, thx for that.  Yeah DDR5 will start at 4000Mhz but as you said if it already does 50Gbps then your right wtf is DDR5 going to bring.  Plus my hunch inside me says 2021 for DDR5.  :0  I think a solid 3200Mhz kit or possibly 4000Mhz OCed would be enough for years to come.  Also you all are right, whatever you buy something newer is around the corner.  I think I will wait for Ryzen specs.

Ouch, we don't want that.  I bet a 16GB DDR5 kit in 2021 or 2022 will cost 300 dollars compared to a 16GB 3200Mhz kit for 100 dollars.

Yes plus DDR5 starts at 4000Mhz , I mean am I really going to tell a difference with a 3200Mhz and a 4000Mhz.  I highly doubt that even on a AMD system.

Actually I hear DDR5 will be 5000Mhz to start with.  With a CL of 42 lol ,,, now whats up with that.

think about the jump from zen 1 to zen +, that's about what i'd expect beyond zen 2. I don't think we are getting 32cores on consumer desktops, waiting past zen 2 probably isn't a good choice (it'll likely be a year +, you can always do another build after it comes out, ddr5 won't be ready for at least another 2 years, (unless you want janky timings). For all the leaks I now expect 16core to be 4.3, 12 cores to be 4.6, and 8 core to be 4.8 (slightly faster than a 9900k so don't get this one)

TLDR, go for zen 2 16 cores, don't wait. I don't expect the slower clock speed on the 16 core to meaningfully impact gaming at 144hz.

Roger dat xg32.  Thanks for your informative post.  Ya I knew its not 2020.... more like 2021 late.  So ya pointless to wait freakin 2 years to get a CL 42 ,,, and I bet it will cost a grip.  Like 300 dollars for 16GB kit.  Also your right the Zen refresh will probably be 2021 which is just a refresh so ya I think Im going to pull the trigger on the 16 core Zen 2 Ryzen.  But Im itching for a ThreadRipper but that would just cost way too much and I don't know how much all those threads will help or even get used.  I run a DAW and never has the CPU choked out, but it needs to be OCed for this.  So do I really need 32c when I don't even do video editing and what not.  Im really itching for a HEDT 64GB RAM Octa channel.

honestly i wouldn't go with TR if you game, at all. 16 core on zen 2 will for sure game like a beast (if a bit slower than the 8 core) without all the jank that was in TR2, if you have work to do then 16 cores are likely enough, i have ZERO interest in TR atm, and it's delayed anyway. a 16core 4.3 part at 7nm would likely match a 7980x without a HEDT mobo.

Yes honestly I don't think I need more then 32 threads for my DAW     .... Plus as you said TR clock speeds will be lower then 38xx Ryzen 16 core.  Now we wait patiently to see what the Mhz will be on this chip.  5Ghz ?  Wishful thinking.

Yes your right my friend.  Screw it, Im just gonna wait for Zen 2.  You wait for Zen 3 , then Zen 4 comes then Zen 5 and so on.  DDR5 then DDR6 etc,, I want a build of mine to last minimum 7 years not including video card.  Which is where Im at now with my rig, so update time comes in July.  giddy!!!
