Hey guys,

So i just build my PC, and with a lot of hassle i finnaly got it to work (Got send a faulty motherboard, and had to wait 10 days to get it replaced).

I was glad to finnaly have a PC, until i started searching the internet. It seems like i got one of the worst power supplies, and i am afraid my computer will blow up.

Specs:

r5 2600X

rtx 2060

16Gb ram (2x8)

PSU: Corsair Vs650 (white/grey one).

I am planning to upgrade to ryzen 3000 series in like 6-7 months so my questions is : What should i do now?

*Wait until i upgrade my CPU and change my Power Supply. ( i have to take everything out anyway, so i dont have to do cable management twice) My question is will the PSU hold up for 6 months

*Change my PSU now. (this is the case of it is dangerous to keep this PSU).

What do you guys think i should do?

Did you get the VS brand new? you can keep it and run your system on stock... no overclocking, while it's indeed a bad unit it probably can do it for the next months until you do the upgrade.

Then you're fine to keep it until you upgrade here in the 7ish months or so.

Okay cool thanks.

What is wrong with the PSU though? I genuinly thought that if you buy the proper wattage, from a name brand, it would be fine. so i just sorted from 600-700Watt, and saw corsair, and though ''Cool''. What should i look for when buying a PSU in the future?

Wattage is pretty much meaningless, your system could run on even a 450W unit.

You never shop by brand but by model, Corsair does have one of the best line ups there is, the TXM and RMx are among the best "value" picks out there however like any other brand it also has the shitty models where to make them cheaper they will do cuts on safety features and over all quality of the components.

The very best thing you can do is simply make a thread like you just did asking for help before you make a purchase, you can also check the PSU Tier List for quick reference on the most mainstream models out there:

I have decided to just return the PSU and get another one right away, dont want to risk destroying the computer. Is a Corsair TX550M a good PSU?

Yes, very much better than the VS and you get semi-modular which is great for cable management.

PSU: Corsair Vs650 (white/grey one).

For your build, that VS650 is perfectly fine.

What could be better:

Efficiency is low.  It does not have modular cables.  It doesn't have advanced fan speed control (thermostatic only).

And if you had a higher end graphics card like a 1080, 2080, or Vega, the double forward topology will cause some noise out of the PSU's transformer (not harmful, just a little annoying).

https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/corsair-vs650-psu,6017.html

That said, the TX550M >>IS<< a much better PSU.  That's why it's more expensive.

It has Gold efficiency.  It is semi-modular.  It uses a more modern resonant mode topology.  It has DC to DC for the non-primary rails so it will support all modern sleep mode states.  It's not much quieter (if at all) then the VS because the fan controller is still relatively simple and there's a problem with an air gap between the outer diameter of the fan body and the cut-out for the fan that reduces the static pressure in the PSU and can cause the fan to spin faster than it should need to.

But you could have done A LOT worse.

Well that sucks for that amount of price maybe CX is better.

The current model of the TX550M with the grey label is 80+ Gold rated.
The much older TX550M "Enthusiast" from around 8 years ago with an orange label is 80+ Bronze, but that has been discontinued for a while now.

Fuck. I dont know who to trust anymore.

Judging by the forum posts i read on the internet the VS650 is way to low end for my components and its at risk of exploding/shorting my components.

Judging by Luna its smart to change.

Judging by some others its fine.. just mediocre.

Should i send back the TX550M? Tbh i dont want to redo the cable managment, i already did that twice.

You think i should swap out the VS for the TXM? I dont plan on keeping this PC for too long, but will i be able to game on it for a year or two? Or is it risking my components?

Funny thing is, this is the 4rd PC i build. On the first 3 builds i used a Sharkoon powersupply. On the Tier list it was lower than the last tier (it was in the ''risk of blowing up your house'' tier haha). Thing is, didnt experience a single problem with those PSU's at ALL (Gamed/edited on them 9 years collectively). Last build had i5 8600k and 1060 so its not like it was some shit PC. Anyway. What would you do? Swap out for the TX550M, or just keep the 80 bucks i paid (by sending it back)

Guarantee that none of the people saying that the VS (at least the one you have) blows up and kills components has ever used a VS power supply.

Opinions are like assholes.  Everyone has one.  And the internet is full of them.  And when it comes to power supplies, a lot of what you see are opinions because you can't run 3D Pass Furmark to know how good a PSU is unlike a graphics card, CPU and RAM, and actual PSU reviews are few and far between and "too complicated" for Joe Enduser to understand.

That said, the TX-M is a much better choice than VS for all of the reasons I listed.  If you want an all around better PSU, consider an RM550x.  It's fully modular and very quiet.

Yeah i get you. I dont mind it though. Even though i am tight on budget (student) i dont mind buying another PSU, because its a lesson for me. Next time i wont skimp out on buying a better PSU for my rig. This might sound funny but i want to play some games before my PSU arrives in 2 days, but i am to afraid to launch anything. Reckon the VS650 will be fine, and not fry my components? :P

I get the message that my GPU disconnected after a 1-2 hours of gaming (battlefield 1) ''GetDeviceRemovedReason... I am starting to think that its because the PSU is failing to continous deliver power to the GPU

Nope. Probably not a PSU problem.

Nope, not PSU related. More likely a driver issue going by the error message you're receiving. Try using DDU to remove your display drivers and download the latest driver version from the AMD/Nvidia website.

Thanks for the help guys/girls. Even though i hate cable management.... , i decided to swap out the VS for a TXM.

I think it was a smart choise. The PC boots almost 2x as fast (i think the last PSU couldnt support ultra fast  boot or something). Overall i am happy i changed Power supplies.

again thanks guys :)

Like jonny said the TXM is a notable upgrade over the VS, even if the VS would be "enough" your whole components, electricity bill and even aesthetic appeal sure appreciates the new PSU.

I'm glad you can game at peace now!
