The Fractal Design R6 does look mighty tempting! Thanks for looking out. I might just go with that and do without having an external 5.25" bay for an optical drive and buy a USB optical drive if need be. ?

Both of those cases have one 5.25 inch slot for an optical drive. I have the R5. The R6 is very nice. I think if you like the style of the Phanteks Enthoo Pro M, you would like these cases too.

So I've recently been looking into retiring my current desktop and building a new one. I've settled on getting a Gigabyte Z390 Designare motherboard. The thing that troubles me is it mentions in the specs that this motherboard has "Front USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C™ Header" so this clued(?) me into thinking these are socket/connectors that connect form the motherboard to the case but almost all cases I am interested in all state "USB 3.0 front panel" but my motherboard has USB 3.1 Gen 2. Does that boil down to meaning the majority of these cases I come across are using USB 3.1 Gen 1 and cannot connect to my motherboard? It's especially frustrating I try to filter specifically for a mid tower ATX case that does have USB 3.1 Gen 2 front panel but I keep getting results mixed in with "USB 3.0". Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places? I've tried pcpartpicker.com and newegg but I'm getting a mix of frustrating results. Also I want my tower to have at least one bay for an optical drive unless USB 3.1 gen 2 front panel with an external 5.25" bay is asking too much. ? This has been bothering me for days not finding what I'm looking for. ?

The case I almost considered buying but then backtracked realizing I can't take advantage of my board's USB 3.1 gen 2 Type C header was a Phanteks Ethoo Pro M Tempered Glass (black). Or could I still use it but be reduced to 5 Gbps transfers?

It's a USB Type-C Header for cases with a USB Type-C on the front panel, the motherboard also has a standard USB 3.0 connector as well. The USB Type-C is only for Type-C connections but the USB 3.0 is for all other USB 3 connections, the Type-C header is optional and only there for if it's needed by the case or something like that. Any case will be fine since it has both connectors.

So it sounds like I could still use the Phanteks case I mentioned but at 3.0 (3.1 gen 1) speed for the front panel unless I find a case with front panel USB 3.1 gen 2 Type C front panel? I guess I could live with that having spent almost a week on this ghost hunt. The motherboard mentions having rear USB 3.1 gen 2 which at least I can take advantage of those rear ports.

Both of those cases have one 5.25 inch slot for an optical drive. I have the R5. The R6 is very nice. I think if you like the style of the Phanteks Enthoo Pro M, you would like these cases too.

Oh sorry. I was just going by the photos I saw on the Fractal Design web page and it looked like a completely smooth case without any 5.25" external bays. I did look it up again once more and found out the 5.25" bay is hidden behind the swinging door thingy I didn't know was there. Thank you so much for pointing that out. ?

You're welcome. The one in the Corsair is even harder to find. It's in some of the photos, but frequently isn't mentioned in the specifications.
