9900k now or zen 2 later?

Seeing the Ryzen benchmarks for the new cpu you can see that it is very close. Is getting a pc with the 9900k going to last me a long time or do I wait for zen 2? 9900k prices are low right now as well so that’s my question. 9900k or zen 2?

May as well wait to see what Ryzen 2 is about, it's around the corner.

I would wait for Zen 2 if CES worth anything just there demo shows that zen 2 is going to beable to provide like or better performance for a better price.

It isn't very close on the multicore side of things. That benchmarks you saw was done not to show whether it performed better, but instead to show that Ryzen 3000 is far more efficient than the 9900k. Zen2 had the potential to pull ahead further as they never revealed the speeds it was running at when against the 9900k. It was likely a bit below stock speeds.

 

If you care about efficiency and price, then yes wait for zen2. If you're solely about performance and don't care about price, the gap will be small whichever ends up being ahead so you may as well get the 9900k now. But let's be honest here...you do likely care about price so wait for zen2.

I guess you just kinda want a new system.  Yeah, I'd wait for Ryzen 2 to see what it's really got for us.

Wait 2 months for the Zen 2.  It will have a 16 core 32 thread version that will slap the sh*T out of a 9900k.  The 9900k is a great CPU if all you want is 8 core 16 threads.  The price is also going to be good, so I suggest once again just wait until Summer unless you must upgrade right now.

9900K will last for a long time regardless, and we don't know there is even a 16c Zen 2 chip on AM4 and if it will beat a 9900K or not. We do know they have one (1) 8c/16t SKU that can match/barely beat the 9900K, they showed that off at CES. Don't know anything about pricing or clockspeeds or any of that. 

 

Basically don't talk out your ass about Zen 2, everything we know about it other than the single 8c/16t SKU I mentioned is all rumour. We don't know of any other SKUs, have no solid info on clockspeeds or pricing, or any of that. 

 

If you want the best CPU right now, go for the 9900K. It won't magically become weak when Zen 2 drops and there's always something better around the corner. 

 

If you don't need a CPU right now, then wait a bit and see what Zen 2 offers, maybe you get better bang for your buck then.

Conversely, why not buy a cooler and OC the 7700K?  A friend has that 7700K and a 1080Ti and a 27" 1440p 165Hz monitor... performs great and will for years.
