9900k + overclock = voltage used

Hey all thanks for reading this short quick post.  My question is to 9900k owners only.  What voltage are you running and what frequency you gettings.  Looks like Im gonna ditch my HEDT and buy a 9900k I just want to know where the voltages should be for a stable 5Ghz overclock.

You can't take someone else's settings and assume they work or be ideal with any confidence, silicon lottery is still a thing with the 9900k.

As well as motherboard used, cooling performance and so on...

 

For what's worth it though; the chances of getting the 9900K stable at 5ghz are still good if you don't cheap out

Where is the best place to buy 9900k perhaps binned.  Amazon ? B&H ? newegg ?

If you wan a binned chip you'll have to go to a specialized seller since Amazon, B&H, Newegg and so on will simply sell the normal retail chip Intel provides them without testing and binning them in particularly, what we still call "silicon lottery".

But doesn't Intel guarantee Turbo up to 5Ghz ?  So some chips don't even reach 5Ghz, what Intel kept promising us then didn't deliver, if getting 5Ghz is a matter of winning the silicon lottery.  I would ditch the 9900k and get a real monster Zen 2 TR 64 threads and 4.7Ghz clock speed but only on 7nm.  I think AMD is coming strong while Intel is sitting there twirling their thumbs as to what stupid codname will hey give to their processors.  9980XE 18 cores,  Zen 2 TR 32 cores.  Its a no brainer which is the most powerful and fast cpu.

We know nothing about Threadripper on Zen 2, think that a 32 cores processor will outperform the i9 9900K on single thread performance is a bit ludicrous.

It does but the Turbo Boost table is as follow:

1 Core - 5.0ghz

2 Core - 5.0ghz

3 Core - 4.9ghz

7 Core - 4.7ghz

So as long as it manages to get to 5ghz with only 2 cores used Intel is not lying, it's just 'smart' marketing.

It does but the Turbo Boost table is as follow:

Wow Princess Cadence you rock big time.  I love this post you made.  So the 9900k is not running at 5Ghz on all cores,,4.7Ghz ,,, this becomes the same as Zen 2 which the TR is said to be 4.7Ghz.  Its a tight race that's for sure.

if AMD Zen 2 TR shows all cores at 4.7Ghz Im buying it,, 1700 dollars and I will not ever upgrade until 2030 maybe.  With soo many threads you can never choke out the PC.

 

This processor will shine on my Sonar Platinum  I can add many virtual tracks I want,, 50 of them if not more.  The 9900k is powerful and will handle it.  If only it had quad ram.

You do know when AMD, like Intel, advertises a "Max Boost Clock", when not overclocked, they also are not running that speed on all cores at once, right?

if you are aiming for 5ghz, silicon lottery, you are looking at 100bucks more for 5.0-2avx binned. For clocks i use 1.05v 4.3avx (constant 20w load instead of 40w on 5.0, 90w full load), 4.7 1.25v (135w full load) and 5.0 1.37v (185w full load), The power draw is another 20% higher on FFT.  I pre-ordered a random chip for 470usd and just got lucky (lost on gpu). I'd start with 1.3v 4.7 on all 9900k oc.

 

3 months out from zen 2 btw, if you are tempted by 16 cores at all just wait.

Yes sir, I learned that with my research.  Youll have 1 or 2 cores at 5Ghz then other cores at 4.9 and 4.8 and 4.7 and what not.

Look they botched Zen ThreadRipper twice.  This one will be the third time.  3rd times a charm.  7nm 64 threads... I could care less if the 9900k gives 10 more fps,, that doesn't make or break my gaming experience or the fact I use the pc mainly as a DAW and don't game much,,

Oh sorry, I never said single core vs single core AMD would win.  But I do know its going to be close.  Even if the 9900k is a bit faster,, wouldn't you want 32 cores more then 8 cores ?

I mean 32 cores is overkill even for me...

 

I think you shouldn't be considering threadripper at all but maybe the highest end mainstream chip that comes out with Zen 2 can still impress you.

 

So I'll go with every one and advise you to wait for Zen 2 before pulling the trigger on the 9900K... if you need cores so much Intel will bring a 9900K with 10 cores by the end of the year as well.

Wow sweet.... No kidding all cores are 5Ghz  I thought 2 cores were 5Ghz the rest 4.9 or 4.8 and 4.7Ghz on other cores.  Only 1.30v.  How did you manage to get all cores to 5Ghz if I may ask ?

I see,  I was given bunk info about the cores being 4.8 and 4.7 and 2 being 5Ghz, but as you say just set it in the BIOS for all cores to be 5Ghz,, that voltage is very low as well which is impressive.

All depends on the CPU really, and the MB used can help.

 

MINE runs at 5 GHz all cores at 1.3V, but that doesn't mean another will.

 

Could be lower or higher.

 

I got one of the early ones through preorder, and full retail model.
