Unanswered Confusion About Ryzen CPUs

Zen 2 = Ryzen 3000 = 3rd gen

Zen+ = Ryzen 2000 = 2nd gen

Zen = Ryzen 1000 = 1st gen

Hi all..

 

I've been in a looooong unanswered confusion about Ryzen CPUs but I was too lazy to ask, but now I'm asking this.

 

We currently have Ryzen 3, Ryzen 5, Ryzen 7, with all of them coded with 2xxx, and I see many people are talking about the incoming Zen 2.

I thought that those 2xxx are codes for 2nd gen of Ryzen code, and the 3, 5, and 7 are the codes for the number of cores.

But people are saying all about the release of Zen 2 but with 3000 nomenclature while there are the 2xxx Ryzens, it cramps my brain..

So which are the actual Zen "2"? Aren't they all of the 2xxx we already have currently so far? Don't you think they're the Zen 2? And what is the Zen 2 but why 3xxx?

Have you ever seen any tech company have consistent/good naming schemes?

Just remember that Zen describes the architecture that is in Ryzen, Threadripper, and Epyc CPUs.  So Zen, Zen+, and Zen 2 are iterations of that architecture.

Probably because Zen+ (2nd gen) is kind of just a bonus. They only made tiny changes, that's why they chose not to call it Zen 2. Zen+ went from 14nm to 12nm and they made small tweaks. Whereas Zen 2 has had a much more dramatic change, as it's going from 12nm to 7nm and it will have had much more work done to it.

 

Think of Zen+ as changing the front pane of glass on your car, and Zen 2 as changing the paint job, adding new headlights, swapping the engine out with a newer one etc.

Intel's naming scheme is alright once you start reading the letter at the back first and ignore the Xeons
