Build that fit in a hand carry suitcase

hey guys

I used to carry an 18-inch (included bezel) laptop and it's had not aged well. I'm currently looking to build a gaming desktop that fits in a hand carry suitcase as I will be traveling a bit for my job. The smaller the desktop, the better, I will be looking for a gaming monitor that also fit in the suitcase if possible and the max dimension is 19.5 inches. I have a keyboard and a mouse already. For the budget, I'm willing to go as high as £2300 and a tiny bit more if I have to. It CAN'T be water cool. I will be carrying through airport security. Thx guys.

Edit, I will be going to Hong Kong soon and I know over there the parts can be a bit cheaper and would like to know all the best place to shop the parts.

You'd need a sub 15L case like a Cooler Master Elite 110, Silverstone FTZ01/RVZ-01/RVZ-03/ML-02, Fractal Node 202, or a DAN Case A4-SFX.

Also keep in mind that the weight limit for carry-ons is 22 lbs/10kg which a PC will easily take up most of it, if not all of it. I don't think most airlines enforce it all the time, but just be aware that they may ask you to leave the luggage as a gate check-in if they find out.

Your budget allows for better components but the best that I can come up without having to worry about thermals and also considering the monitor's resolution is the above.

Build it into a Pelican case. The case itself can work as a case this way. You can build the display into the top lid. With access to a 3d printer you can fabricated several case parts. Get yourself an itx mainboard and a PCIe riser cable. make room for a tenkeyless keyboard above. You can add a compartment tha accesses the backpanel i/o. You can add vent holes as well. I'd go with a Ryzen 7 chip because of better thermals compared to a 9900k. Throw in whatever gpu fits your needs.

Or get a modern gaming laptop. They should be in your budget as well. LTT just reviewed one.

You aren't gonna be able to get any decent 19.5" monitor, an option is to find a barebones laptop that accepts standard desktop components(and an MXM GPU or smth).

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Heatsink: Gelid Phantom Black GPU: Palit RTX 3060 Ti Dual RAM: Corsair DDR4 2x8GB 3000Mhz mobo: Asus X570-P case: Fractal Design Define C PSU: Superflower Leadex Gold 650W

https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/notebooks/octaneVI-15/ get something like this, then you get to upgrade it with an MXM GPU and 1151 CPU in the future.

For the monitor, I was thinking about one of those portable USB display and they cost around 250 pounds. I mean I'll be playing some game but not competitive you know. Maybe I'll buy a proper gaming monitor for the main base of my job.

I like the idea, I think it might be too big for the cabin of the airplane. I'm not too sure. I'll check it out. I have a gaming laptop and not a fan of the keyboard and the cooling. I mean I need to bring an external fan and mechanical keyboard and mouse which add extra bulk for my current gaming laptop. So might as well go all in for a desktop

Yeah, that is true, there are not many good monitors in that range. I might get 2 monitors one for traveling and. one for the home base.  I through MXM is dead and the Alienware area 51m is ideal but not the most effective way of spending cash and I absolutely hate Dell customer service. I once spent almost 6 months fixing my new laptop. That is another story for another day.

they still make MXM cards, they're hard to find and expensive but it's better than having some soldered GPU. clevo and eluktronics have barebones laptops that accept desktop CPUs and MXM GPUs so they still have some upgrade room.

Really, then what's the point of Alienware area 51m custom GPU slot...

They never check the weight of the hand carry. I have once had hand-carry that weight like 18kg. So just say nothing.

Shipping from those websites is going to take forever and yeah the cost is just too much for me.

I know the PSU is overkill. I just don't want my PC to get fried

The PSU isn't gonna kill your system just because you overloaded it, that only happens if you get a bad PSU that doesn't have the necessary protections.

shipping isn't gonna take that long, 1-2 weeks via air shipping. good luck finding a monitor that isn't 768p since you can only fit 19.5' monitors.

There usually is at least a minimum size everyone will accept. Carry on luggage is standardized but there are at least two different sizes. The smaller size as adopted by a lot of budget airlines is afaik 55cm x 40cm x 20cm for bigger pieces and smaller pieces up to 35cm x 20cm x 20cm. There are pelican cases that fit perfectly into the bigger form factor. Some airlines will go beyond this. By reducing the amount of unneccessary casings you will probably be even more on the safe side. You combine everything into one piece, the case is also your carry on luggage. Several professional field devices (and military ones) are being built into these cases. It's not as straight forward but rugged as hell.

Yeah, I had friends that lost a whole pc because he left like only 50watts or something like that overhead. The PSU he used was a well-known brand. For me, I would rather not have the PSU near or at full peg when the pc in on. Besides, I can reuse it for a future build when I have the chance to upgrade to a bigger pc when I have a permanent base.

that doesn't happen unless you got a crappy power supply, a decent one is fine with running full load. brands mean absolutely nothing with power supplies, brands people call 'good' can sell crap and vice versa. just look up the EVGA N1 and raidmax RX-700AT.

thought about something like a skull canon nuc yet?

I don't think there's a better option than the Nuc there along with a portable gaming monitor(i ve seen them at massdrop from time to time). I mean you can build a desktop in a suitcase as a "case" but i really don't know if they will let you pass through security check no matter how well you ll try to explain that this is a desktop not anything else(i.e. you know what i mean). And if you travel a lot that would be so tiring and annoying.

Second best choice would be a laptop with lots of ram and a good cpu along with an external enclosure for gpu like the Gigabyte Aorus GPU Box.

Well, he had a corsair one, ironically I'm buying one. It's more of a place holder until I can find a Seasonic or EVGA that is available. I'm still deciding should I get gold or plat certified PSU.

It does not seem like they are selling it in the UK anymore. :(  I hear the Razer makes one but no GPU  with it tho and I heard there is a compatibility issue with it
