minecraft modded lag spikes

Deuxez

i want to play some modded minecraft, but it seems like i get HUGE lag spikes while i play. They either come randomly or if i drop/something else happens. I got a screenshot of the lags spikes. i cant play at ALL. And i also noticed that the debug pie gets invaded by the "tick" thingy. Dont know what that means tho.

Are you the one hosting or is somebody else?

I'd recommend that you try disabling other unnecessary tasks, giving Minecraft a higher priority than other problems, and checking if your RAM or HDD usage maxes out when you get the spikes.

Quote

Lag spikes are caused by three possible things:

Just remember, there are multiple ways to fix these problems, and multiple things that may be causing these problems.

  • Too many packets!
Minecraft can only handle ever-so-many chunk updates in a single setting; tick. Because it cannot finish all the updates in that single 1/20 of a second, it freezes the world until it is able to complete the processing for that tick.

You can improve the amount of work it can do by getting a better CPU; processor (or giving Minecraft more priority over other tasks). RAM only allows you to have a greater workload; not go through that workload quicker.

Because the server and the client (if you're playing single-player) are both linked, your game freezes when it is unable to finish all the work (updating of data; the world OR rendering the world*) within the time frame of a tick (1/20 of a second).

* Note: More than 20FPS means more than one frame created in a single tick.

  • Wait. I'm still writing...
When you have a Minecraft world, the game constantly saves the world to the disk (unless you've increase the interval that it does this) every 3 seconds. However, if the server is unable to write to the disk, it freezes the server to ensure that the data state that needs to be saved does not get changed. If it can save it in one go, of course - Everything will continue as per normal.

Pretty much, the only way to prevent this is to stop all, or at least the processes/tasks/programs hogging I/O capabilities in background that is reading to the disk, or get a better hard disk drive.
(i.e. Steam updating files, copy-pasting commands, saving school/home/work-work etc.; anything involving reading and writing to a disk)

  • Inefficient coding, AKA. Bugs
Very unlikely, if not - Not even applicable here, but there may be bad coding in the game and mods' codes that make it leak memory or constantly remember new things in memory without clearing out redundant values.

Though some of the large mods are known to do this, and most of them by now have already fixed most (if not, all) problems causing spikes in memory usage. The only way is to solve this is to fix the coding yourself, if the source code is released.

Its an server but im not the one hosting it. And as you can see in the minecraft screenshots minecraft doesnt use all the ram i allocated to it. so i dont think its the ram. And i got an 1tb SSD, it got good read and write speed but imma check first if it goes up to 100%

modded minecraft is far from a polished experience and it can bring even the best systems to there knees also on maps like that the water physics can cause Issues.  Did you down load the using the twitch launcher? and if so did you turn the ram usage to max?

I use the Twitch launcher yes. and no i didnt turn the ram usage to the max since it barley uses 50% of the ram while having 6gb allocated. And this might help yall understand why im so lost with all this fps drops. I aint playing on some normal world... Its an skyblock.. with literlly NOTHING near me except my island. so im super lost why i would have so bad fps. image.thumb.png.b4fc5eb142c8e5ef72c23f369fcd820c.png

Is this a custom modpack, or a pre-configured one (a FTB pack for example)?

Also, the server could be responsible for the lag; the sever might be having RAM, CPU, or network issues that increases latency and causes these lag spikes for clients.

I play skyblock and project Ozone and Fool craft and all of them say to turn up the ram usage in the twitch launcher.  Skyblocks can cause issues with textures especially water and lava try picking them up with a bucket and seeing if that helps. Also make sure there is no water flowing from your island down because that can cause issues as well. along with vines

Its an FTB modpack. And im the only one on the server that is experiencing lag spikes. there are currently around 4 other people playing.
