CPU upgrade for Dell Optiplex 390

That doesn't necessarily mean that the CPU is the bottleneck. I just realized that you are using an OEM machine. Is it a small form factor? If it is than the best GPU you can get is a 1050ti.

My computer is not able to play any even slightly newer games, and the bottleneck seems to be the CPU.

Hardware:

CPU:

Intel Core i3 2120

MoBo:

Dell OM5DCD a00

RAM:

8GB ddr3 1333mhz

GPU:

Nvidia GTx 1030ti

HDD:

Seagate 250gb

PSU

Evga 450w 80+

Monitor:

Dell 24in 1080ppi

I wanted to plat games like Overwatch, Gary's Mod, and Portal, with at least 30+ fps, but 60 preferably.

Nvidia GTx 1030ti

Once the CPU is upgraded, this is your next bottleneck for 60fps 1080p gaming.  You'll likely need to bump-down to 720p to play games on that card if you want good FPS.

Also, there is no such thing as the 1030 ti , do you mean basic 1030, or do you mean 1050 ti?

FYI, if you have the DDR4 version (there are 2 mem config variants of the GT 1030) you may have a card that Gamers Nexus dubs: "A Disgrace of a Graphics Card": https://www.gamersnexus.net/hwreviews/3330-gt-1030-ddr4-vs-gt-1030-gddr5-benchmark-worst-graphics-card-2018

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

Upgrading your graphics card will do you more good than upgrading your CPU. An I3 is NOT bottlenecking a gt 1030. Sell the 1030 for $50 and pick up a rx 570 from Ebay for $75 to $80.

https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F333153382515

If you want to upgrade the CPU. You can put in an I5 2500 or I7 2600. You can also get a xeon e3-1240 4 core 8 thread like an I7 but no integrated graphics.

by bottlenecking, i meant the entire system (sorry I don't understand that terminology) It was the part that was going at 100% and getting a frame every 5 or so secconds

Your CPU was at 100% and your GPU was not? In what game? What program are you using to monitor usage?

No, it's still had a micro atx mobo, but it is large enough for a bigger gpu

I think these super-budget revivals of older PC's are super cool, but frankly if you're looking at investing money into a 2nd gen Intel for a little 1030, it might be a better investment to just part ways with that box, and build!

Here is some reference where an $90 APU is outplaying your GPU.

That said, I'd part ways with your system. You could probably get like $50 if you asked for it on a local sale (take your GPU out of course.) Could probably ask another $50 for the GPU. There's $100 upgrade money toward something like this:

This will run TF2, Portal, and Overwatch, Fortnite for you. And in the future you could add a used RX 570 or 580 for pretty nice 1080p performance on current titles! Even a used HD 7870 or R9 270X for around $35 would be a good investment for your 1080p monitor. You'd be over 60FPS easily.

Small edit made to parts list: MOBO upgraded

You will need to replace your power supply to one with a 8 pin power connector if you  upgrade to a rx 470

you dont NEED to throw the whole PC away. if 60fps 1080p is your target in those games.

You'll want a GPU upgrade, any that's NOT money wasted as you'd spend that regardless so look at the best budget GPU that meets your requirements

as for the rest of the system, if the info above is correct and your board will accept a 3rd gen i7 then you have some potential budget upgrade options there...

i7-3770 processor £80

https://uk.webuy.com/product-detail/?id=scpuinti73770&categoryName=processors-intel&superCatName=computing&title=intel-core-i7-3770-(3.4ghz)-lga1155

Another 8GB RAM £20

https://uk.webuy.com/product-detail?id=smem8qaa&categoryName=memory-desktop-ddr3&superCatName=computing&title=8-gb-pc10600-ddr3-1333mhz-240-pin-memory

[Those Prices are from a UK retailer, you'll find much better deals on ebay, craigslist etc. thats just a worse case/easy pricing]

if it was me i'd go for a new GPU, and then try it, IF its still not good enough and youre struggling with the rest of the system THEN consider upgrading the processor and memory.

I've not tried a 3rd gen CPU nor have I seen a bios update to do do for my optiplex 390. I upgraded to i7-2600, gtx 960, 16gb 1600, and SSD. This machine plays Sims 4 with 30 mods and gtav at 1080p 60hz great.

So if I did that, are you assuming the HDDs blank? Because I've got Win 10 pro, would that go for more. (also should I include the wifi card?)

If it is the drive that the PC boots from? Yeah, just include it. (Pro is pretty much included in all office PCs.) It's not like you have to go buy a full copy for $100 somewhere. It's free from Microsoft or dirt cheap these days. (I am rocking 2 separate OEM copies of PRO from ebay at less than $5 each. No issues in either case.) Make your bootable thumb drive on your current pc before you get rid of it.

Move your files and stuff you wanna keep to the new SSD; it will all fit. Then wipe that one to a clean windows for the next guy. Nobody will wanna buy your old PC if it doesn't boot.

You don't HAVE to sell the old PC. It just doesn't necessarily have much in the way of becoming a home server or anything like that. Might as well go to the next hopeful who wants to shove a 1050Ti in there or something, and help fund your upgrade.

As to the wifi card: is it an external adapter, or is it built into the PC? Honestly, I always hard wire in for gaming. The connection is always going to be more stable than wifi, and you're not battling for bandwidth with other devices on the network. Plus, ethernet cords are cheap! If it's a usb adapter, just keep it!

This build has a few nice upgrade paths:

  1. The APU will beat your current system, but the CPU has capability to handle a much better GPU when you're ready to buy one and step it up in the future.
  2. The RAM upgrade will be translatable to any updates for the forseeable future. No more paying $100 for an old, used DDR3 capable CPU when a superior DDR4 CPU is the same or less.
  3. The Mobo could support a more powerful Ryzen (like a 2600) in the future, as long as you don't want to overclock. (This board won't hold up for that.) Though I wouldn't expect this model to translate to a Ryzen 3rd gen. We don't quite know what to expect there yet.

An ASRock Pro4 (MATX) would be a significant upgrade to the posted system, if you can fork over an extra $12 right now. That is an amendment I would like to submit lol. This would only accentuate the CPU upgrade path, as this could handle even a  2700X if you didn't OC it. With a cooler upgrade, you could also OC your APU on this board for better APU results. I updated the original post.

The wifi is a pcie x1 card, and has no ethernet, but works fine.  can you tell me how you got the windows though? I have never heard of this.  also if anything, i would sell my lenovo thinkcentre m78 5100, and keep this system, because it would fit more hard drives for a NAS on the inside (<opinion on that?)

I mean bruh... My opinion is just get new gear. You don't have to sell or keep anything. The point I make is that your gear is old and wasn't particularly powerful even in its heyday, and the possible upgrades aren't great options. The parts I posted are a very inexpensive upgrade path into the new era. The new system has an ethernet hookup, which is more secure than wifi either way. Keep your PCIE card if you wanna!
