I think they probably look at loads of things that we don't know about yet, I wouldn't go changin you mobile provider over it, but hey thats just me.

Ok the articles I skimmed over raise some good points and for the record I don't support the NSA  at all I hope it dies in a fire. But unfortunately I don't think there's much anyone can do about this. I mean the ceo's of google microsoft yahoo etc. went to the white house about this and they got nothing. I will also say whilst the NSA is spying on us a human being probably won't get to see any of our private details unless a complex algorithm flags something you do as suspicious.
