1080 ti beyond repair?

Hey all, here is an interesting one for you:

 

My friend has a 10-year-old PC and he keeps updating it. I don't agree with his ways, but he duck taped 52 AA batteries to power the 1080 ti. I knew something bad would happen and low and behold the battery acid got all inside the 1080 ti. My question is, is it repairable?

Depends on the extent of "got all inside". This will require a full teardown and cleaning, with some close examination. There's no way this is covered by warranty, just a heads up.

52 X 3.75w isn't even enough to run the card. Plus 52 AA batteries would be hella exspensive

lets see where he went wrong shall we?

 

1. those sets of batteries can only give 2,6 amps of sustained power
2. if in series he would be putting 78 volts through the powerconnector
3. if putting in paralell at the correct voltage of 12 volts, he would put them in series of 8. but even then he only has 2,6 amps of sustained power. (also not the right number of batteries to do that. hense the batteries exploding. 

 

 

to do this more propperly you would need (if ive done my amateur electrics correctly)

1. 480 batteries to achieve 24 Amps to propperly power the card
2. put them in series of 8
3. then have 60 of those puppies in paralell. 

 

there are a lot of reasons why this went wrong. 

 

the only thing i can say is: pull the cards apart. do some cleaning and see if anything is broke.

I don't believe it worked though, I just believe it failed miserably.

And you know how it is, people will do just about anything to avoid buying a good PSU for whatever reason.

I'm not sure if you're the troll or OP is the troll, ATX PSUs convert AC to DC you know, and batteries are certainly DC.

I dont think OP means acid (acid ones are way to big), but zinc chloride or even potassium hydroxide (which is an alkali). Just liquid out from a battery and 90% of people think it's acid lol.

a good PSU isnt a dent in someone's pocket when they can afford the 1080ti... just man up and buy the PSU... like really...

Pull the card, soak it in a bath water till it's clean, rinse it and let it dry for 1 day burried in rice.

But even if it would have worked it would have lasted only a few minutes at full load

it failed with only 2,6 amps of total sustained powerdraw and 5,2 amps peak powerdraw. 

 

that plus the high voltage (if he didnt account for that or depending on how he did it) didnt help

 

the batteries shortly overheated from overdraw of power. 

 

 

this is the only thing i can see happenening with any similar system. there is simply not enough Amps to draw, and no real protection against drawing too much.

Hell, maybe not even that. It might have died immediately. I don't trust someone with this rudimentary of an understanding to rig up all these batteries correctly, and who knows, maybe even previously used batteries were hooked up.

I feel like OPs friend just randomly put batteries and thought it would work
