Xeon W-3175X - go for it or wait for sub-14nm for next overkill build?

I've been debating selling my x299 cpu and motherboard to put that towards a new Xeon W-3175X rig, possibly moving the HEDT setup into a Thermaltake Tower 900 (though that only has 1 PSU location).

 

However... given how long Intel has been stuck on 14nm, and how we're supposedly getting 7nm AMD this summer (7/7 if the rumors hold true), it seems plausible that Intel will be forced to answer with a smaller process I'd imagine within the next 12-18 months.

 

Given the ludicrous pricing of HEDT to begin with, and even moreso stepping into whatever category of overkill the $1800 motherboard and $2900 Xeon W-3175x would be placed in - I'm not sure even I can justify dropping about $5k to upgrade (probably would just need to buy the mb, cpu, another 2 16gb sticks of matching 3200mhz CL14 G.Skill Trident-Z RGB DDR4, and EK's cpu block) given that it seems somewhat likely that this thing wouldn't even be top dog for more than a few months.

 

Taking budget itself out of the equation (no I am not made of money), does my concern about spending a ton for something that will likely be superseded relatively soon make sense?

We shoud be seeing 10nm later this year (Ice Lake) as well which will be about equal to AMD's 7nm (transistor sizes are not measured the same)

Yeah you should always be a bit concerned when you're spending that much money. If you don't ABSOLUTELY need that much more performance then it's probably better to hold off until you can actually justify it when whatever you are doing actually could benefit from the extra performance.

Yes but my 7960x already can do 5.2ghz all core (it gets hot, I've only run it that high for benchmarks in basically freezing ambient). 

 

The 9990XE is a binned 9940x i believe.

Z399 & other X599 parts are surely in the pipeline, I wouldn't dump a high end X299 system right now, especially for the overpriced ridiculousness that is the W3175X.  I would wait with all the big parts that are on the horizon in the next 6 months.

Ridiculous and pointless overkill. Honestly my current HEDT is primarily used for homework these days since I don't have much free time. It is handy when I'm working on Android projects to run those in a Linux VM and still be able to game without taking a performance hit though.
