I have my English paper tomorrow and came across this hard question. Pls help

This is a legitimate question. I have my english grammar BOARD exam tomorrrow and have this query. I tried stackexchange but to no avail, so I became desperate and am asking here. Moderators pls dont pull this down.

"Though it rained the whole night, the town was not flooded"(Use the word 'notwithstanding' without changing the meaning of the sentence)

 

In the above question, we are supposed to reframe the sentence using the word 'notwithstanding' without changing the sentence's meaning. I think it should be something along the lines of-"notwithstanding it having rained the whole night, the town was not flooded". The basic rule is that the sentences must be pretty much similar without any change in their meaning Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance.

I have an issue with whoever is teaching the class since, in the example you gave, "notwithstanding" is not needed and using it would be both redundant and pretentious.

I wouldn't know any-other way to write that sentence using "notwithstanding" but as Lady Fitz said, it's not needed and and makes the sentence sound like a law firm is saying it. I guess Notwithstanding a whole nights rain, the town was not flooded. could work?

That's the one.

 

notwithstanding means "In spite of" or similarly "Even though".

 

If you change the word with the definition, it becomes (in a logical sense):

 

In spite of having rained the whole night, the town was not flooded.

 

Remove "though" replace "in spite of" and with notwithstanding.

 

"Notwithstanding it having rained all night, the town was not flooded/did not flood.

I would actually word it "The town was not flooded, the whole night of rain notwithstanding."

 

Putting "notwithstanding" at the beginning of a sentence is just weird.

"Do as I say, not as I do."

-Because you actually care if it makes sense.

In this case, 'notwithstanding' can be either be used as a preposition, or a conjunction. Neither of which should be at the end of a sentence.  And using it as a conjunction like @AqHuhad it, while not technically incorrect, looks stupid.

 

"Notwithstanding a whole nights rain, the town was not flooded" like @TempestCatto said would be the most correct usage.

Huh. Just checked the Google definition and all the examples have it at the beginning of the sentence.

That is awkward as hell. I can't remember ever even seeing it used like that...

 

I guess it's sort of like Bismark's speech. He said "Not through speeches and majority decisions will the great questions of the day be decided—that was the great mistake of 1848 and 1849—but by iron and blood," but come on man, you know he meant to say "blood and iron."

I can say I got an A* in English language at GCSE, but I cant think of a time I would ever use notwithstanding, let alone how to put it into a fucking sentence.
