2080 - Low GPU utilization

Go to solution Solved by Mason Fraser,

Back on topic, it sounds like it's a driver conflict, remove all nvidia drivers, do a google on how to purge them, reboot the system, install the correct drivers again.

Back in september i  switched out my 970 for a brand spanking new 2080.

I quickly experienced that the card was under performing though,

only reaching 60% usage in most games, 100% in Forza,

and some times it just rejects everything and slowly goes to idle usage

(youtube video is of the event).

I as many other people ended up blaming my i7-4790k for the issues,

blaming it on a CPU bottleneck and to few lanes, since i was running the card in 8x.

Last week i switched out my 4790k with a 2700x, thinking that new mother board, new ram, new cpu, would do the trick.

But alas it did not, exact same problems as before.

Getting 10 - 20fps more, but i write that off as the 2700x doing its job.

I have tried most solutions:

Reinstalling drivers

using old drivers

"Buying a new everything else"

Checking Bios settings regarding the card (running at 16x)

Making sure the card has enough power, testing differences between nvidia DSR and non DSR.

Overclocking

Under clocking

Using only one display.

V-sync

I know allot of people have this same issue,

and most of them just get scurried away with "CPU bottleneck".

So i hope this confirms that it isn't a CPU bottleneck.

What are your CPU and GPU usage and temps? obviously your GPU usage is low but everything else. Is your RAM 1x16gb or 2x8gb?

My CPU usage is normal , using 50 - 100% in games, usually staying at 60 - 70 degrees.

GPU as i said varies but usually stays between 40 and 70% usage, and staying at a cool 40 - 50 degrees.

I run two 8gb DiMMs in dual channel at 3000Mhz, (who buys single channel?)

I have changed the XMP profiles for RAM i bios, so it'll run at the advertised speed.

This is a older post, with the same problem from when the cards first came.

So you’ve ran a Unigine benchmark or firestrike to endure the card goes to 99% percent? Watching percore usage as it should max out one on a unigine benchmark with that card. Did you make the switch to 1440 yet?

Haven't used a gpu benchmark other than the ones in, GTA5, Hitman 2, Rainbow 6: Siege and Ghost recon: Wildlands.

Have not been looking at per core performance, will do when i get the chance to.

And yes i have been on 1440p 144hz since when i got my 970 back in 2015

Up the resolution or settings it isn't utilized because it isn't needed the CPU can't provide what it needs in the first place...

EDIT: Also make sure in the nvidia control panel power management mode is "prefer maximum performance".

Hey i have checked controll panel.

But lets say, i am not complaining about the lack of utilization, it is performance, i run some games worse than my 970, because the card is not being used

dont listen to that guy, comments like that are not needed and the 2700x is a very good chip

I think you have some software issues going on.  Nothing wrong with the hardware and no bottleneck

CPU i7 4960x Ivy Bridge Extreme | 64GB Quad DDR-3 RAM | MBD Asus x79-Deluxe | RTX 2080 ti FE 11GB |
Thermaltake 850w PWS | ASUS ROG 27" IPS 1440p | | Win 7 pro x64 |

Funny you mentioned that your 2080 paired with 4790k with low GPU Utilization. I myself have an 4770k with a 1080ti which tbh is on par with the 2080 in terms of preformance roughly. I game at 1440p 144hz and i can tell you in 90% of the games i play i get 100% GPU AND CPU Utilization. Meaning im maxing out my CPU and GPU. I have a two monitor setup and on my second monitor is a bunch of monitoring programs. When i game i can see how much im pushing my card and CPU.

Have to remember the more demanding the game the better for your GPU and CPU to push it too max. Older games will not do this. So no matter what people say there is NEVER going to be a time when you going to hit the perfect balance between CPU AND GPU becuase of the software/games you will be using.

Does this help?

benchmark.html

Not really. Like I said, need to see the system while being used. Cpu usage per core along with gpu usage. Benchmark on full screen as well. Then do the same with a game you have issues one.

Magga can you share how you removed/purged all Nvidia drivers? I'm having the same issue as you and I'm not certain of the correct way to do this.
