Is a "Mining Edition" GPU usable for other types of compute?

As the title, basically... Can you use one of those cards without outputs for other types of compute tasks, such as BOINC, Folding@Home, etc., or are they sufficiently weird/crippled that they can only be used for cryptomining?

If you're on AMD then you can basically do whatever you want, I've seen people buy mining edition RX 580s just to go crossfire with standard RX 580s

If I were to be lazy, OS would probably be Windows 10; if not lazy, Linux. GPU would probably be Radeon; I seem to be seeing more of those on Ebay right now. For this application I don't care about gaming capability, Crossfire/SLI, etc.; this would only be for compute.
